Undergraduate Programs of Study

Accounting

Students learn how companies communicate with investors, how managers use information to plan and evaluate operating results, and how businesses comply with audit and tax regulations. The major provides a foundation for careers in accounting, finance, management, and the law.

Art History Minor

The art history minor is designed to complement the majors in various fields of study, such as art studio, English literature, French, Spanish, and philosophy. The program provides experience of art historical and theoretical questions through two introductory survey-style classes and a range of topics-based classes.

Asian Studies

This interdisciplinary program explores Asia’s diverse cultures and contemporary social, political, business, and economic issues, combining the study of languages, humanities, and the social sciences.

Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

This program is designed to prepare students for careers in biochemistry and molecular biology, in the related fields of cell biology, microbiology, molecular genetics, or in the health sciences.

Biology

Through laboratory and field-based experiences, our students practice scientific thinking by posing questions, designing research projects, collecting, analyzing and interpreting data, and presenting findings.

Business Administration & Management

The department’s majors and the minor offer a personal, pragmatic, professional business education steeped in the liberal arts tradition that prepares graduates for fulfilling careers in the global economy.

Chemistry

Students learn the theoretical concepts and laboratory skills important to being chemists, as well as how to read primary literature, plan experiments, and acquire and analyze data.

Communication Sciences and Disorders

Students learn to identify the differences between normal and abnormal communication processes, to understand types of communication disorders, and to integrate the experimental literature into clinical practice.

Computer Science

Computer science is the discipline that studies the concepts and techniques used in designing, analyzing, and developing software. At Redlands, students will study the fundamentals of software design and implementation, computations, and algorithms. Advanced topics are offered in areas such as data analytics, mobile development, and software engineering.

Creative Writing

Students take writing workshops in fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction. Advanced seminars and a final portfolio are required. The department also organizes a reading series and a literary journal.

Economics

Three degree paths offer students a wide range of political economic, quantitative, and/or financial courses aimed at generating constructive analyses of real world issues.

Engineering 3-2

In partnership with Columbia University in New York City, the University of Redlands provides students the opportunity to earn both a B.S. from Columbia University's School of Engineering and Applied Science and a B.A. or B.S. from Redlands.

English: Literature and Writing

The program fosters a deeper understanding of the English language, independent thought, and critical acumen, preparing students for careers as varied as advertising, law, journalism, public relations, and publishing.

Environmental Science

Students are encouraged to examine the relationship between humans and the natural environment from a variety of perspectives, drawn from the natural and earth sciences, social sciences, and the arts and humanities.

Financial Economics

The major in Financial Economics emphasizes the financial side of economics and the applicability of accounting to economics and finance.

French

The French program combines a rigorous emphasis on grammar and composition with a comprehensive exploration of French literature from the 14th Century to the present. Many French majors choose to double major.

Global Business

This nationally recognized major prepares students for a career in international business, public and not-for-profit service, as well as graduate study in disciplines including law, finance, business, and government.

Health, Medicine, and Society

This program integrates coursework relevant to the field of medicine from across a number of disciplines, preparing students for career paths from medical provider (physician, nurse, physician, assistant, midwife) to health care administrator, and from public health officer to healthcare policy advisor.

History

Students learn historical methods and theories; develop diverse, global perspectives; produce award-winning research; and enter many careers, including business, law, publishing, and teaching.

Human-Animal Studies

Human-Animal Studies (HAST) is a rapidly growing interdisciplinary field devoted to examining and critically evaluating the relationships between humans and nonhuman animals, be these relationships historical or contemporary, factual or fictional, real or symbolic, beneficial or detrimental.

International Relations

Students integrate interdisciplinary approaches to the study of international and global interactions, using their knowledge to interpret the behavior of state and non-state actors. All students also communicate in a non-English language.

Johnston Center for Integrative Studies

Students in the Johnston Center produce a contract in collaboration with faculty that designs an individualized education, comprised of an emphasis with defined learning goals, liberal arts breadth, and a cross cultural experience.

Latin American Studies

The program brings together knowledge from the humanities, the social sciences, and environmental studies to build a foundation in the cultural, economic, political, historical, geographical, and aesthetic contexts of Latin America.

Liberal Studies

This program, for students interested in teaching grades K–8, introduces various approaches to education from a variety of disciplinary perspectives, preparing students to undertake research projects in education.

Management

This program provides students with an understanding of the complex environment in which organizations function as well as the challenges that decision makers face in organizations.

Mathematics

Students gain a deep appreciation for an understanding of mathematical ideas with the opportunity to apply mathematical tools to problems from the sciences, social sciences, arts, and humanities.

Media & Communication

Students draw on offerings from diverse academic fields across the College as they engage critically with a wide array of historical and contemporary media, from the printing press to post-network television.

Music

Students in the Conservatory of Music focus on performance, composition or music education, or choose from a variety of minors, including jazz and vocal music. Through a conservatory approach in a rich liberal arts setting, students learn to perform, interpret, and teach music.

Music Minor

The music minor is designed to encourage the development of competence in a specific area of music: Jazz Studies, Instrumental or Vocal Music, or Music History.

Philosophy

Students examine theories of value, knowledge, and the nature of reality. Faculty have particular interests in human/animal ethics, philosophy of mind, the Chinese tradition, and the philosophy of medicine.

Physical Education Minor

The minor offers numerous physical activities and fitness opportunities designed to promote a healthy and active lifestyle.

Physics

The Physics department offers both Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees, both of which offer training in the fundamentals of physics, from classical mechanics to quantum mechanics.

Political Science

Political Science students develop analytical skills through dynamic coursework across concentrations (world politics, law and politics, campaigns and elections, and government and policy), experiential learning courses, and internships in Redlands, Sacramento, and Washington.

Prelaw

The prelaw program prepares students for law school through a broad base of interdisciplinary courses.

Pre-med/Pre-health

The pre-med/pre-health professions program has been designed to help students meet the requirements for entry into medical school while providing maximum exposure to core science competencies in a liberal arts context.

Psychology

Students explore developmental, biological, cognitive, and social contributions to human activity, both normal and abnormal. As well as learning about the processes of behavior, students learn to think critically and solve problems.

Public Policy

The Public Policy program combines the knowledge from such theoretical disciplines as economics, political science, sociology, and other fields and applies the tools of statistical methods to solve human problems in such diverse areas as education, health care, poverty, civil rights, immigration, the environment, and national security.

Race & Ethnic Studies

Faculty and students work closely to explore the complex and often challenging issues of race, ethnicity, and racism from an interdisciplinary perspective. This work prepares our students to thrive in a diverse and global society.

Religious Studies

Students explore the religious beliefs, actions, and practices of individuals and communities across the world and throughout history, gaining an inter-cultural literacy and appreciation for other worldviews and cultures.

Sociology & Anthropology

With courses on aspects of social life worldwide, this program strives to understand humanity in all its social and cultural diversity, exploring the relationship between individual experience and its broader cultural and historical contexts.

Spanish

Students explore the varied cultures and literatures of the Hispanic world as well as developing their language skills to native or near native proficiency. Students also have the opportunity to study abroad in a Spanish speaking country.

Spatial Studies Minor

Spatial Studies uses multi-dimensional representations of information to help structure problems, find answers, and express solutions. The ability to visualize and interpret relationships through space (be it ‘real' or ‘conceptual') is essential for understanding content and solving problems.

Studio Art

Students learn the conceptual and hands-on processes of making art—drawing, painting, photography, graphic design, printmaking, ceramics, and sculpture—in a new 25,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility.

Theatre Arts

The program nurtures the theatre artist in body, intellect, and spirit. Students are encouraged to pursue diverse theatre goals, cultivate individual expression, and understand theatre as a tool for social and cultural discourse.

Theatre Business

The Theatre Business major draws its foundations on a solid footing in theatre arts theory and practice as well as entrepreneurial skills from the department of business. Majors are trained in both theatre arts and business practices.

Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies

This interdisciplinary program, which draws on a rich offering of courses across the CAS curriculum, brings together diverse sources of research, analysis, insight, and experience to examine issues associated with women, gender, and sexuality.
