On November 14th, 1998- members of the Tectonic Theater Project traveled to Laramie, WY and conducted interviews with people of the town. One month prior, a twenty-one year old gay student named Matthew Shepard was abducted, tortured, and left to die. The members of the Tectonic Theater Project set off to produce a play that investigates the events surrounding the brutality and murder of Matthew Shepard. The play has been produced many times and has been seen by more than 30 million people around the country. The script consists of transcripts, texts, and more than 200 interviews of the Laramie community. This production provides an exposé of a broken community not only trying to make sense of “How can it happen,” but “How can it happen here?” Twenty years later, we hope to honor Matthew Shepard, his family, and all other victims of hate crimes, as the University of Redlands Theatre Arts Department proudly presents The Laramie Project.
