One Day: On the Road to the ADA

Adapted by Victoria Lewis

Date: Thursday November 29th at 7:00 pm

Location: Frederick Loewe Theatre

Cost: Free!

The play opens the doors on the first hearing of the Americans with Disabilities Act in September 1988. The room was packed with famous senators, disabled leaders, one Navy admiral, and regular disabled people from all over the country. Everyone had a story to tell. Combined those stories capture a moment of national crisis, a tipping point where the American identity was redrawn.

Come and enjoy an evening of social history as we consider the politics of theatre and resistance then and now. The documentary/verbatim script is taken from the transcripts of the September 27, 1988 joint hearing, interwoven with additional interviews from major players in the legislative battle.

This event is wheelchair accessible and interpreted in American Sign Language.

This event is funded in part by the California Arts Council, a state agency, and the National Arts & Disability Center at the University of California, Los Angeles.
