Post-graduation FAQs
Optional Practical Training (OPT) is a program available to international alumni holding F-1 visa status, allowing them to gain practical work experience in their field of study for up to 12 months post-graduation, with a possible 24-month extension for STEM fields. Alumni interested in OPT must apply through the Office of Global Education (OGE) before their student visa expires. The application process involves coordination with the OGE and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to ensure compliance with all legal requirements. Successful applicants are granted work authorization, enabling them to enhance their professional skills while contributing to their field of study in the U.S.

For international graduates, departing the U.S. after completing their studies or OPT period requires careful planning. You should check the expiration dates on their visa and passport to ensure they depart before these documents expire. It's also wise to consult with the Office of International Students and Scholars about any steps or notifications required before leaving the U.S. Alumni should also consider their tax obligations, closing or transferring bank accounts, and shipping personal belongings, among other logistical considerations.
Information about entering and leaving the US can be found here.
If you're considering continuing your education after graduation, our graduate programs at the University of Redlands offer an excellent opportunity to further your academic and professional development.
STEM-designated for OPT (Optional Practical Training) – graduates with these STEM degrees are eligible for 24 extra months of legal employment in the U.S. Please reach out to the Office of Global Education to see selected graduate programs that offer this opportunity.
To remain in good standing with your visa status, you’ll need to work closely with the Office of Global Education to ensure all necessary paperwork and authorizations are in place.
To request a library card, please fill out either the form for University alumni or the form for visitors. Borrowing privileges are limited to in-person access to our physical collection and are $50 per semester for visitors. Alumni may request a card at no charge that will be valid for three years.
