Storytelling as a Hook for Mapmaking

Dr. Steven Moore, Director, Center for Spatial Studies

The story maps offered in this collection represent students' engagement with the concept that good spatial storytelling begins with careful mapmaking. The process of creating maps before building story maps encouraged students to address the following issues before engaging in other aspects of storytelling: (1) maps as storytelling media in their own right; (2) space, time, and scale as they relate to Humboldt's travels; (3) representing intellectual as well as geographic journeys; and (4) the opportunities and challenges of symbolizing mapped narrative content. Mapping with a co-edited feature service provided excellent opportunities for students to learn basic concepts about GIS, attribute tables, and data visualization.
