Food Access in San Bernardino County, California

Debapriya Paul, 2023, MSGIS Cohort 41

The project aimed to assess the accessibility of food stores in San Bernardino County by analyzing the proximity of Census Blocks to such stores, using a 10-minute walk or drive time as a measure. The analysis found that the majority of the population in the county lacks access to food stores within a 10-minute walk, but access by driving is more evenly distributed. The project also explored the relationship between household vehicle ownership and food store access in Redlands. The conclusion of the research highlighted 64% of the population (1.4 million people) living in areas that do not have access to stores within a 10-minute walk, and only 1.4% of the population living in areas that do not have access to stores within a 10-minute walk or drive time.
