Geomorphon Analysis for the Conservation of the Eastern Black Rail

Ava Klein, 2022, MSGIS Cohort 38

The eastern black rail is a federally declared threatened species that is experiencing habitat loss and population decline. Little is known about the specific characteristics of its habitat. In order to determine the habitat profile of the species, North Carolina’s Audubon Chapter needed GIS analysis performed on bird survey points taken in Cedar Island National Wildlife Refuge, North Carolina. Using the geomorphon forms of the area, the presence-absence data for the species was analyzed in an attempt to determine the characteristics that form its habitat.
