Psychology Professor Catherine Salmon helps Business Insider readers separate fact from fiction.
University of Redlands Psychology Professor Catherine Salmon recently lent her expertise to a Jan. 19, 2017 Business Insider article on “middle child syndrome.”
Coauthor of The Secret Power of Middle Children, Salmon has spent two decades researching thousands of middle children. Her work has included studying their personal relationships, social interactions and beliefs.
Although middle children tend to receive less parental attention, she says, they often form strong bonds with their siblings.
“I actually think there may be an advantage being the one who is not overly supervised,” says Salmon in the Jan. 19 article. “I think that sort of excessive parenting you see sometimes prevents children from developing the independence they really need to function on their own.”
