MHTIC

The Inland Empire Mental Health Training & Integration Center (MHTIC), housed and supported within the University of Redlands School of Education, works to strengthen the behavioral health workforce through rigorous counselor education, innovative supervision practices, and community engagement.

The Inland Empire Mental Health Training & Integration Center

Guided by a commitment to equity, social justice, and culturally responsive practices, MHTIC prepares future counselors to serve the diverse needs of Inland Empire communities while expanding access to mental health education, services, and resources.

Central to this work is a commitment to promoting mental health and well-being across educational, professional, and community settings. Drawing on principles outlined in the U.S. Surgeon General's Framework for Workplace Mental Health & Well-Being, MHTIC integrates workplace wellness, mental health literacy, and mindfulness into its programming while working to challenge stigma, reduce discrimination, and promote healthier, more connected communities.

Our Mission

Access to counseling, support services, and wellness education is critical to optimizing mental health and wellness across the lifespan. By helping to bridge the mental health workforce gap, our programs train counselors to be mental health leaders and advocates in their diverse Inland Empire communities, increase access to services throughout the region, and advance mental health and wellness literacy for vulnerable and high impact populations.

Our Approach to Health and Well-Being

MHTIC programs are grounded in the Seven Vital Conditions for Health and Well-Being framework, which outlines key factors that enable people and communities to thrive. Each vital condition represents a crucial aspect of overall well-being and helps guide MHTIC's approach to curriculum, training, services, and community engagement.

The Seven Vital Conditions include Basic Needs for Health & Safety, Lifelong Learning, Meaningful Work & Wealth, Humane Housing, Reliable Transportation, Thriving Natural World, and Belonging & Civic Muscle.

Sylvia Hobart Mack Wellness Hub

The Sylvia Hobart Mack Wellness Hub (The Hub) is a dedicated training and wellness space within the University of Redlands School of Education and the brick-and-mortar home of MHTIC.

The Hub supports the education and professional development of Clinical Mental Health Counseling students while serving the University community through MHTIC's workplace wellness programming and open hours. The space provides faculty, staff, and students with access to wellness education, activities, resources, and a welcoming environment for reflection, connection, and overall well-being.

The PRACTICE: Professional Readiness and Clinical Training through Integrated Community Experience

The PRACTICE is an MHTIC initiative that provides Clinical Mental Health Counseling students with opportunities to develop practical counseling skills through supervised clinical experiences. Incorporating telehealth, Single Session Therapy, and peer group supervision, The PRACTICE connects classroom learning with hands-on training while preparing future counselors to meet the evolving mental health needs of diverse communities.

MHTIC in the Community

MHTIC extends its work beyond The Hub through initiatives that promote wellness, strengthen community partnerships, support professional learning, increase mental health literacy, and reduce mental health stigma and discrimination throughout the Inland Empire.

For nearly a decade, the annual VIBE Health and Wellness Festival has brought the University and Inland Empire community together around health, wellness, education, resources, and connection. Through community partnerships, interactive activities, and access to local health and wellness resources, VIBE encourages healthier lifestyles, strengthens community connections, and promotes mental health and wellness literacy while raising support for wellness initiatives and counselor education.

Y Girls VIBE is a youth-focused wellness camp developed in partnership with the YMCA of the East Valley and University of Redlands Clinical Mental Health Counseling students. Historically serving middle school-aged girls from Highland, San Bernardino, and Redlands at no cost, the program provides opportunities for wellness education, personal development, and community connection. Beginning in Fall 2026, the program expanded to welcome boys, creating additional opportunities for youth to engage in wellness programming.

The Youth Mental Health Academy (YMHA), an initiative of the Child Mind Institute, provides high school students with opportunities to explore careers in mental health through education, professional development, and hands-on experiences. Through its involvement with YMHA, MHTIC supports youth professional development, mentorship, and community engagement while introducing students to opportunities in the behavioral health field.

Held annually in May, the Inland Empire Integrated Behavioral Health Conference brings together behavioral health and health care providers, health care systems, educators, students, policymakers, county partners, and other community stakeholders for professional learning and collaboration. The conference supports interdisciplinary approaches to behavioral health, strengthens connections across systems, advances mental health literacy, and helps reduce mental health stigma and discrimination.

Founded in 2014 to advance conversation about and action toward mental health and wellness, ACTW helped establish pathways for community engagement, wellness education, and mental health advocacy that contributed to the development of MHTIC. In 2025, federal funding supported the advancement of this work through the establishment of MHTIC, expanding opportunities for counselor training, wellness education, and community engagement. ACTW continues to support MHTIC as its fundraising arm.
