Life – what an interesting and rewarding time to study it!
Our biology department offers a range of courses across the diverse subjects studied by biologists. Our classes are small, and biology faculty members teach all lab and field sections. We emphasize science as a way of learning through laboratory and field-based experiences. Students develop their skills of scientific thinking by asking questions, designing observations and experiments, collecting and interpreting data, and communicating their findings. Laboratory and fieldwork also allow our students to gain technical skills. We offer significant research opportunities, including paid summer internships and academic projects during the school year. Approximately half of our majors have significant research experience by the time they graduate. As a biology major at Redlands, you'll have the opportunity to build a solid foundation of scientific knowledge and research skills to help solve some of today's most challenging and rewarding problems.
Why learn biology at Redlands
Why learn biology at Redlands
Many Redlands students take part in Summer Science Research, a 10-week paid internship program that allows them to focus on a research project while working closely with a faculty mentor. Through this experience, students develop valuable hands-on skills that translate directly to their post-graduate careers.
About half of our graduates pursue careers in health. Our Pre-Health Pathway program provides recommended coursework and faculty advising to prepare students for admission to graduate and health professional schools. A major or minor in biology is not required to enter the health professions.
Biology majors often enhance their education through study abroad experiences and/or pursue a second major in foreign languages (Spanish or French), art, business, English literature, music, or religious studies. Many also choose to minor in chemistry.
Our dedicated professors bring extensive expertise to the field, earning awards, publishing impactful research, and sharing their knowledge as invited speakers. Most importantly, they are invested in mentoring students, supporting their growth, and guiding their academic journey.

Student Testimonial
“The [Summer Science Research] program allowed me to get a feel for what research would be like as a career. It allowed me to see what it would be like to collect and analyze data, and it also allowed me to gain valuable experience for any sort of career in the biology field.”
— Alex Munoz ‘23, Biology major and human-animal studies minor

Annual event
Each year, the Human-Animal Studies (HAST) program brings faculty, students, and community members together for a lecture series featuring world-renowned animal scholars and activists. These lectures (usually three per year) draw a mixed and lively audience of from fifty to one hundred fifty people. Students are given the opportunity to make personal connections with our lecturers at dinners and beyond.
