What is a Master's in Interdisciplinary Design degree?

The Master's in Interdisciplinary Design prepares the next generation of designers to navigate an increasingly connected, complex, and rapidly changing world. Designed for creative professionals who want to expand their practice beyond the boundaries of a single design discipline, the program brings together research, experimentation, emerging technologies, systems thinking, and hands-on making. Students develop the ability to move across disciplines, media, technologies, and scales while creating meaningful experiences, products, services, and systems.

Woodbury School of Design and Media Arts offers two tracks to fit your goals:

  • The one-year Master of Science in Interdisciplinary Design (MS) track offers an intensive professional experience centered on interdisciplinary collaboration, advanced design practice, and the development of new skills and perspectives.

  • The two-year Master of Design in Interdisciplinary Design (MDes) track provides additional opportunities for in-depth research, thesis development, cross-program collaboration, and specialization in emerging areas of design and technology.

Both pathways prepare designers to address complex human, technological, social, and environmental challenges through creative inquiry and purposeful design.

Why earn an interdisciplinary design degree at Redlands?

Today’s most significant design challenges cannot be addressed through isolated solutions. Climate change, technological transformation, shifting social structures, and interconnected global systems require designers to understand relationships, anticipate consequences, and consider the long-term impact of what they create.

The program expands the traditional idea of human-centered design toward a life-centered approach, encouraging students to consider not only individual human needs but also communities, society, interconnected systems, and the natural world.

Designers emerge as creative practitioners, researchers, collaborators, and responsible stewards capable of contributing to positive change.

Who is this program for?

The program also responds to a profession being transformed by an always-connected world of smart products, digital platforms, services, and increasingly complex experiences. Rather than preparing students for a single professional role, the curriculum develops adaptable ways of thinking and making that can evolve throughout a career.

Through interdisciplinary collaboration and exploration of emerging technologies, students learn to work across interaction, experience, service, strategic, and systems-oriented design, preparing them to shape new possibilities rather than simply respond to existing ones.
