COVID vaccine clinic on the Redlands campus (English and Spanish)

Many people in the University of Redlands community have recently reached out to me with questions about COVID-19 vaccination.

Some of these questions have been prompted by the news that teachers who will be in San Bernardino County classrooms during this school year are now eligible to receive coronavirus vaccination appointments via their schools or school districts. (Appointments through the San Bernardino County website are still reserved for seniors; however, vaccination eligibility status is fluid and varies by county.)

Does this mean that University of Redlands faculty or staff are also eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine? And will the University host a COVID vaccination clinic?

I have good news on both questions.

VACCINE ELIGIBILITY FOR HIGHER EDUCATION SECTOR

This week we received information from the Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities, which had requested clarification on the status of higher education from the Newsom administration. The California Department of Public Health’s updated COVID-19 vaccine allocation guidelines now explicitly state that the Education and Childcare sector includes “all staff in colleges, universities, junior colleges, community colleges, and other postsecondary education facilities.” This means that University of Redlands faculty, staff, and administrators are eligible to receive vaccinations under Phase 1B at the same time as K-12 school employees. COVID VACCINATION CLINIC ON THE REDLANDS CAMPUS

Today I am pleased to announce that we will be operating a COVID vaccine clinic on the University of Redlands main campus (Orton Center), partnering with Redlands Community Hospital (RCH) and other organizations within the City of Redlands. This city-wide collaboration, which we are calling Operation Greater Good, was spurred by the need and desire to vaccinate our community without having to rely on San Bernardino County. In addition to the University and RCH, Operation Greater Good includes the following partners:  Redlands Fire Department, Redlands Police Department, Esri, and Redlands Unified School District.

U OF R CLINIC RESPONSIBILITIES

Unlike the County Testing Site operating out of University Hall since November, the University will be fully responsible for the operations of the vaccination clinic, which is planned to open by March 15, with direct support from RCH and additional help of the Operation Greater Good partnership.  This means:

• The University sets the hours of operation and controls the setup of the clinic (outdoor spaces as well as inside the clinic).
• The University must provide the staff to operate the clinic. We have a detailed operations plan on how we will manage this and believe we will need 60 people per day to cover the various positions required. We will staff the clinic with volunteers from our internal community, and, once we are up and running, we will seek volunteers from the Redlands community. Details and information on how you can volunteer will be made available soon.
• RCH will manage the registration system and will provide us with an employer code soon. This code will enable you to schedule your vaccination appointments.
• RCH will secure, draw, transport, administer, and track each dose of the vaccine.
• RCH will provide the medical staff to administer the vaccines and handle the health care aspects of the clinic.

CLINIC LOGISTICS

Some important items to note:

• The clinic will only be open on days that vaccines are available. As you have probably heard in the news, the supply chain is still unpredictable. The University will plan to have the clinic staffed Monday through Friday each week, but may not be able to operate each day if vaccine doses are not available.
• RCH is able to secure both the Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccinations, which will be administered based on availability (you will not get to choose which one you receive). Whichever kind of vaccine you receive for your first dose will be the one you receive for your second dose. When you receive your appointment confirmation, the vaccine brand will be noted. You can deny an appointment if you do not wish to receive the vaccine assigned to you, however, this means you have to schedule a new appointment and there is no guarantee the other vaccine will be available.
• Clinic appointments on any given day will be either for first or second doses. Never will the clinic offer first and second doses on the same day.
• RCH manages the appointments and vaccine distribution to its partner sites (currently, this just includes Esri and the University in addition to the small site located at the hospital). When you register using the employer code RCH will be providing, you will be assigned to a clinic that may or may not be the University site but within one of the RCH clinics.
• Vaccines are available while supplies last on a first-come, first-served basis per San Bernardino County tiers eligibility guidelines. Please understand we do not control the supply chain and must follow the State guidelines for administering the vaccine. We will be strictly adhering to the rules in conjunction with our partnership with RCH. Only those who meet the tier requirements and have a valid appointment will be allowed to enter the site.
• Given the uncertainty of vaccination availability, if you have the opportunity to receive a COVID vaccination at an existing distribution site before our site is up and running, you may wish to do so.

U OF R VACCINATION CLINIC ELIGIBILITY AND GUIDELINES

The U of R clinic vaccination eligibility and guidelines, which will be strictly enforced, are as follows:

1. You live or work within San Bernardino County.
2. You are over 18 years of age if registering with an employer group code (we will be given a code for all University of Redlands employees).
3. If you have recovered from COVID-19, you must be symptom-free and out of your 14-day quarantine period.
4. If you received intravenous treatment for COVID-19, you need to wait for 90 days after treatment.
5. If you have had a vaccine against another disease (such as a flu shot) within 14 days, you will need to wait to get the COVID-19 vaccine. Vaccines cannot be administered within 14 days of each other.
6. You have not received the COVID-19 vaccine from another facility. This is a two-dose vaccine; both must be administered by Redlands Community Hospital via the University of Redlands Clinic or at another clinic designated by Redlands Community Hospital.
7. You must commit to the second dose at the time you schedule the first dose.
8. You MUST bring a valid photo ID as proof of eligibility to be vaccinated. If you do not bring valid identification, your appointment will be rescheduled—no exceptions. If you are being vaccinated within Phase 1B as described above, you must also show proof that you are employed at the University.

This is a huge undertaking at a time when resources are constrained, and there are still many logistical aspects of hosting a vaccination clinic that have not yet been worked out. But I am grateful that we have reached a stage of the pandemic where we are able to participate in vaccine distribution. The University remains committed to doing all it can to protect the health of its faculty, staff, administrators, and students, as well as to contributing to the larger Redlands community. This is a historic moment, and these efforts reflect the University’s dedication to its core values and the people who make our educational endeavor possible.

ELEGIBILIDAD DE VACUNAS PARA EL SECTOR DE LA EDUCACIÓN SUPERIOR

Esta semana recibimos información de la Asociación de Colegios y Universidades Independientes de California, que había solicitado aclaraciones sobre el estado de la educación superior de la administración de Newsom. Las pautas actualizadas de asignación de vacunas COVID-19 del Departamento de Salud Pública de California ahora establecen explícitamente que el sector de Educación y Cuidado Infantil incluye "todo el personal de universidades, universidades, universidades, colegios comunitarios y otras instalaciones de educación postsecundaria". Esto significa que los profesores, el personal y los administradores de la Universidad de Redlands son elegibles para recibir vacunas bajo la Fase 1B al mismo tiempo que los empleados de la escuela K-12. Esta colaboración en toda la ciudad, que llamamos Operación Gran Bien,fue impulsada por la necesidad y el deseo de vacunar a nuestra comunidad sin tener que depender del Condado de San Bernardino. Además de la Universidad y el RCH, Operation Greater Good incluye a los siguientes socios: Redlands Fire Department, Redlands Police Department, Esri y Redlands Unified School District.

RESPONSABILIDADES DE U OF R CLINIC

La Universidad planeará que la clínica tenga personal de lunes a viernes cada semana, pero es posible que no pueda operar todos los días si las dosis de la vacuna no están disponibles.
• RCH es capaz de asegurar las vacunas Moderna y Pfizer-BioNTech, que se administrarán en función de la disponibilidad (no podrá elegir cuál recibe). • Dada la incertidumbre de la disponibilidad de vacunación, si tiene la oportunidad de recibir una vacuna COVID en un sitio de distribución existente antes de que nuestro sitio esté en funcionamiento, es posible que desee hacerlo.

ELEGIBILIDAD Y DIRECTRICES DE LA CLÍNICA DE VACUNACIÓN U OF R

La elegibilidad y las pautas de vacunación de la clínica U of R, que se aplicarán estrictamente, son las siguientes:
1. Usted vive o trabaja dentro del Condado de San Bernardino.
2. Usted tiene más de 18 años de edad si se registra con un código de grupo de empleadores (se nos dará un código para todos los empleados de la Universidad de Redlands).
3. Si se ha recuperado de COVID-19, debe estar libre de síntomas y estar fuera de su período de cuarentena de 14 días.
4. Si recibió tratamiento intravenoso para COVID-19, debe esperar 90 días después del tratamiento.
5. Si ha recibido una vacuna contra otra enfermedad (como una vacuna contra la gripe) en un plazo de 14 días, tendrá que esperar para recibir la vacuna COVID-19. Las vacunas no se pueden administrar dentro de los 14 días siguientes a la otra.
6. No ha recibido la vacuna COVID-19 de otra instalación. Esta es una vacuna de dos dosis; ambos deben ser administrados por Redlands Community Hospital a través de la Clínica de la Universidad de Redlands o en otra clínica designada por Redlands Community Hospital.
7. Debe comprometerse con la segunda dosis en el momento en que programe la primera dosis.
8. DEBE traer un documento de identidad con fotografía válido como prueba de elegibilidad para ser vacunado. Si no trae una identificación válida, su cita será reprogramada, sin excepciones. Si está siendo vacunado dentro de la Fase 1B como se describió anteriormente, también debe demostrar que está empleado en la Universidad.

Se trata de una gran empresa en un momento en que los recursos están limitados, y todavía hay muchos aspectos logísticos de la acogida de una clínica de vacunación que aún no se han elaborado. Pero agradezco que hayamos llegado a una etapa de la pandemia en la que podemos participar en la distribución de vacunas. La Universidad sigue comprometida a hacer todo lo posible para proteger la salud de su facultad, personal, administradores y estudiantes, así como para contribuir a la comunidad más grande de Redlands.
