Communicative Disorders Seminars

Michael Groher, Ph.D. is Professor and Chair of Communicative Disorders at the University of Redlands. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Washington in 1975. He is best known for his work with adults who have swallowing impairments, publishing three texts on the topic: "Dysphagia: Diagnosis and Management," "Introduction to Adult Swallowing Disorders" and his most recent work, "Dysphagia: Clinical Management in Adults and Children," published in 2009.

Michael is an associate editor for the journal "Dysphagia" and is a Fellow of the American Speech Language Hearing Association. His current research interests are in evaluating the outcomes of surface electromyographic biofeedback techniques in the treatment of chronic dysphagia, and in the evaluation of patients with cervical dysphagia.

Using sEMG (1 day - .6 CEUs)

Description: Participants work in pairs with surface electromyography (sEMG) units to master the set-up, recording and reviewing of data obtained with sEMG technology. Participants are given a series of tasks designed to enhance their familiarity with the technology and receive feedback during each simulated activity.

Seminar Objectives:

  • Delineate the theoretical constructs of using sEMG as a treatment modality for dysphagia as background for hands-on applications

  • Apply published outcomes with the sEMG signal and treatment interventions as rationale for hands-on experience

  • Receive formal instruction and practice using sEMG units (Pathway 15 or 25) by Prometheus Group

Dysphagia Management (1 day - .6 CEUs)

Description: This seminar focuses on how we make those decisions for our patients. There will be an emphasis on case studies in order to develop diagnostic treatment plans based on patient videos/clinical data.

Seminar Objectives:

  • Understand how we make clinical decisions using clinical cases supported by physical and instrumental examination data

  • Show how the use of surface electromyography can help objectify behavioral treatment activities

  • Show how disorders of the esophagus might affect pharyngeal function
