Spirituality, social justice, innovation

At San Francisco Theological Seminary we believe that religion—and specifically Christian faith—should inspire each of us to be a positive force for good in the world. It should show us the way to make the world a better place, not just for some, but for everyone. Founded in 1871 and rooted in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), SFTS values dialogue and engagement with other religions and faith traditions.

Program offerings

Graduate and doctoral studies

Our seminary courses and degrees are grounded in a faith-affirming, world-engaging, and multidisciplinary approach. Whether you want to become an ordained minister via a Master of Divinity (M.Div.) or pursue a Doctorate in Ministry (D.Min.), you can choose from a variety of theological studies that best reflect where you are on your personal faith journey.

Other educational opportunities

The theological seminary offers dynamic and impactful continuing education opportunities for students and working professionals. Certificate and diploma courses are designed to offer focused, short-term study or an opportunity to deepen personal spirituality or the spirituality of others.

“I enrolled at SFTS to explore what it looks like to create new, experimental, inclusive, open-minded communities of faith in our fast-changing world…and participate in the incredibly unique, groundbreaking, spiritual, and activist communities that this one-of-a-kind city offers.”
