About Reverend Dr. Joanne Whitt
An ordained Presbyterian minister within the PCUSA, Joanne brings decades of experience in ministry, theological education, spiritual formation, and organizational leadership. She has served congregations throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, including nearly 15 years as pastor of First Presbyterian Church of San Anselmo, directly across the street from the SFTS campus.
She has served as the adjunct instructor of preaching at SFTS, a credentialed spiritual director, and a guest preacher in Bay Area churches. A triple alumna of the seminary, Joanne earned a Doctor of Ministry, Master of Divinity, and Diploma in the Art of Spiritual Direction from SFTS. She also served on the SFTS Board of Trustees for 10 years.
Prior to entering ministry, Joanne practiced law in both Texas and California. Her legal career included service as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Houston, a trial attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice in San Francisco, and a partner in private practice.
Dean, San Francisco Theological Seminary
The dean provides leadership and works in collaboration with faculty and students to sustain effective teaching and learning, review and manage the College curriculum, and promote faculty development. The dean has oversight responsibilities in the faculty review process and is responsible for management of the SFTS budget. The dean represents the SFTS in University-wide academic policy and decisions via the Dean’s Council and serves on the President’s Cabinet.
