My areas of expertise are race, gender and class in modern Latin America and the African Diaspora. Currently, my research focuses on the cultural influence of African American musical performers such as Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Dizzy Gillespie and Nat King Cole upon the development of Afro-Cuban music, in particular jazz, in Cuba during the 1940s and 1950s.
As a Latin American cultural historian, my research background is rooted in archival and ephemeral documents related to twentieth century social and cultural history of the race, class and gender in Cuba and African Diaspora. I also incorporate jazz music from the US, Africa, the Caribbean and Brazil, salsa, and son (Cuba) in my scholarly research and writings. Moreover, my research incorporates the significance of Afro-Latino religions, such as santería (Cuba), vodun (Haiti) and candomblé (Brazil) in the social construction of gender, national identity and cultural nationalism within the African Diaspora in the Caribbean, South America and the United States.
