Jessie Hewitt teaches a wide variety of classes on Modern European history.  She also regularly teaches classes in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGS) and Health, Medicine, and Society (HMS) programs. Professor Hewitt's research concerns the historical relationship between disability and gender, especially the ways in which normative perceptions of masculinity and feminity shaped the development of the medical professions  in nineteenth century France.

In 2020 she pulished a book, Institutionalizing gender: Madness, the Family, and Psychiatric Power In Nineteeth-Century France (Cornell University Press).
