Geography Awareness Week | November 2023

Celebrate the importance of Geography and Geographic Education at GeoWeek!  Nov. 13 - 17, 2023

Each year more than 100,000 Americans  participate in Geography Awareness Week (GeoWeek). Established by presidential proclamation more than 25 years ago, this annual public awareness program organized by National Geographic Education Programs (NGEP) encourages citizens young and old to explore the significance of place—including how we affect it and are affected by it. During the third week of November, students, families and community members focus on the importance of geography by: hosting events; using lessons, games, and challenges in the classroom; and, meeting with policymakers and business leaders.

Learn to Fly a Drone! Workshop

Will Wagner | Spatial Instruction Manager

Besides being fun to fly, drones can be a ticket to jobs with geospatial companies, film studios, commercial photographers, law enforcement, and other employers. This workshop will cover current regulations regarding use of drones for commercial and noncommercial purposes, requirements for becoming a licensed drone pilot, and how to fly a quadcopter drone.

Mapping Metal Workshop

Few genres of popular music are as polarizing as metal (aka "Heavy Metal"). Depending on the listener, it can induce cringes, derisive laughter, or bliss.  In this workshop you will discover why it is a global phenomenon and learn to map the expansion of metal on a global or national level and understand how it engages with issues like inequality, war, history, mental health, and more recently, the environment.

Humanitarian Mapathon

We will be mapping the global communities that have recently been affected by earthquakes, typhoons, fires, floods, or disease.

We’ll teach you the basics so no GIS or mapping experience necessary. Computers are available in the lab, but we ask that you bring a laptop if you have one so we can reserve the computers for those that need them. Stop in for 10 minutes or three hours!
