About the Department of Psychology

One of the most popular majors at University of Redlands, the psychology major prepares students for graduate study, future careers in psychology, and provides valuable skills for other professions, including marketing, data sciences, health professions, and social work.  Students come to understand the biological, cultural, and social influences on behavior. They also learn to read and evaluate critically the broad range of scientific literature in the field as well as the application of methods of research used in the study of human behavior. In the capstone course, students have the opportunity to practice research skills and/or engage in an applied field placement/internship, which in the past have included such settings as schools, hospitals, police departments, assisted living, and animal shelters.

The department offers a breadth of courses that cover core subject areas in psychology, such as Social, Developmental, Evolutionary, and Counseling. Many courses deal with psychological questions and findings related to practical problems of human society, including Cross-Cultural Psychology, Psychology of Prejudice, Criminal Behavior, Psychology of Aging, Behavioral Modification, and Abnormal Psychology. In addition to regularly scheduled courses, the department periodically offers special topics courses such as Sports Psychology.

Why learn psychology at Redlands

University of Redlands supports study abroad through May Term courses, semester programs, and summer research. Psychology majors have studied at universities across Austria, Australia, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, Spain, and the UK.

Psychology majors often complete one or two minors in addition to their Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. Some industrious psychology majors also major in other fields such as biology, business, communicative disorders, data science, HMS, languages, and political science.

Students complete a required capstone experience that integrates their coursework through hands-on research or applied work.

Redlands has a Psi Chi organization and a Psychology Club for psychology students to connect. Psi Chi is open to those who are making the study of psychology one of their major interests and who meet academic eligibility requirements, and the Psychology Club is open to all students.

“Redlands will always hold a special place in my heart, as someone who works closely with people entering their college years. I fondly remember my May term spent studying group therapy and visiting Freud’s apartment in Vienna, which solidified my interest in becoming a psychotherapist. The small community and familiarity of interactions with my professors meant that I could meaningfully participate in action research and have unique experiences, such as taking trips into the greater community to serve meals to those in need. These elements I experienced at the U of R are a crucial aspect of my continued motivation to work, teach, and practice in the field today.”
