The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World

What if instead of everyone competing for scarce resources, we built a world around sharing what we have? That's the question botanist Robin Wall Kimmerer explores in this year's campus read, using something as simple as a serviceberry bush as her guide. Serviceberries don't hoard their fruit, they share it freely with birds, animals, and people, and somehow there's always enough to go around.
Kimmerer blends her scientific training with Indigenous knowledge to challenge the idea that everything has to be bought and sold. It's a short, powerful read about community, generosity, and what we owe each other and the environment, themes that connect to everything from business and environmental studies to religion and the humanities on our campus.
As you get ready to start college, The Serviceberry is a great way to start thinking about what kind of community you want to be part of and what you might be able to give back to it.
