Amalgam (noun): A mixture or blend

Artist’s Note by Natalya Simone Libao

Amalgam is the collection of work made by the Class of 2026 Studio Art Majors at the University of Redlands. While this show features sculptures, photographs, paintings, and graphic designs newly created this Spring, these ideas have been, for some, brewing since the Fall, for others their whole college career, and for everyone — our entire lives.

The passion this group possesses is unparalleled. It bleeds into every paint stroke, every pixel, every print, every polished corner of every project. It is so immense that it even expands amongst ourselves. When one of us is experimenting with a new technique or forging down a different path, we all take on the task with them. In the past year, we’ve built such a genuine camaraderie during this formative stretch of our artistic journeys. With every comment offered, critique shared, and question asked, we were growing more and more connected. What started as collaboration has now become an unbreakable bond. Doubts, laughs, worries, triumphs — it’s all been had, and it’s all been had together.

It is this level of unity that we want to be known for. This exhibit may be the assortment of thirteen individual bodies of work, but for us, it is truly the amalgam of our combined ideas, experiences, and skills, translating across all our various mediums. So as you encounter every piece, know that each of these creations were not shaped by just one hand, but by a community that lifted it into being.
