Brent Geraty, General Counsel

August 16, 2021

Dear Faculty, Staff, and Students,

Today, I am announcing Brent Geraty’s decision to resign from his position as the University’s general counsel, effective October 1, 2021. Although Brent reached this decision prior to my arrival, I want to express my appreciation to him for delaying his departure to facilitate a smooth transition. Brent has decided to continue his service to the higher education community through the creation of an independent consulting practice. Because of the admiration that the University and Brent have for each other, I am pleased to say that the University of Redlands will be Brent’s first client.

Brent’s thoughtful and balanced approach to his role, and his unquestioned commitment to the University’s mission, have served the institution well. Brent joined the University in 2015 as Redlands’ first in-house general counsel. Prior to coming to the University, Brent served for 15 years as the general counsel at Andrews University and, prior to that, Brent was a labor and employment attorney in private practice. A graduate of Yale Law School, Brent’s career has had the advantage of stellar credentials; nevertheless, he has carried himself with humility and a service mindset.

Please join me in extending to Brent our appreciation for his service as general counsel. We can look forward to periodic engagement with Brentin the future. The University will now undergo a process to determine how best to ensure that the University’s legal needs are met prior to undertaking what is expected to be a national search for Brent’s successor.

Finally, Brent asked to provide the University community with the following statement:

It has been an honor to serve the University of Redlands as general counsel during the past six years and I look forward to serving the University from time to time while I also expand my practice. The Redlands experience is an advantage in which I fully believe. While I am energized by new challenges ahead, I also am grateful for the many kindnesses shown to me by members of this University community. I remain optimistic about Redlands’ future and I will look forward to being a cheerleader for, regular financial contributor to, and periodic consultant to, the University.

Sincerely,

Krista L. Newkirk
President
