Professional Background

Deon Garcia’s teaching interests focus on building strong mathematical foundations for calculus students and introducing mathematical topics for the liberal arts, including voting theory and apportionment. She is also interested in the mathematical education of current and prospective teachers.

In 2005 and 2006, Garcia participated in two weeklong conferences focused on Preparing Mathematicians to Educate Teachers (PMET) at SUNY Oswego in New York.

She was also involved in a consortium funded by a National Science Foundation grant that piloted the Mathematics Preparation Initiative Program to improve the mathematical understanding of middle school mathematics teachers.
