Kimberly Welch Ph.D.
About
As a Latin American cultural historian, Kimberly Welch’s research background is rooted in archival and ephemeral documents related to twentieth-century social and cultural histories of race, class, and gender in Cuba and the African diaspora. She incorporates music traditions including jazz, salsa, and son into her scholarly research and writing and examines Afro-Latino religious practices as critical elements of cultural and gender formation across the African diaspora.

The cultural influence of African American musical performers such as Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Dizzy Gillespie, and Nat King Cole on the development of Afro-Cuban music, particularly jazz, in Cuba during the 1940s and 1950s
