Whether participants aim to spur personal or professional growth, the new Certificate in Theological Studies from San Francisco Theological Seminary (SFTS) at the University of Redlands Graduate School of Theology will guide them on a self-paced path through the foundations of Christian theology.

“Many prospective students we spoke to this year were seeking theological studies for professional development or personal enrichment but wanted a shorter program than our master’s degree [in theological studies],” says Marin Campus Director of Enrollment David Altshuler. “This new program provides an excellent online overview of theological education.”

The certificate explores the disciplines of church history, New and Old Testament biblical studies, and systematic theology. Based on students’ unique needs and desired pace, the certificate can be completed in one or two years.

“We believe an understanding of theological perspectives fosters compassion and connectivity—skills that are essential to improving relationships and communication in personal and professional life,” says Marin Campus Director of Integrated Marketing Elizabeth Huntington. “While the courses are highly academic, many students experience transformation in seeing new ways of thinking.”

Students who enroll for the fall semester will be able to complete the certificate online. When regional and national health conditions improve, the program will pivot to a hybrid format with some offerings on the Marin campus.

Students interested in pursuing additional study in the field can use credits from the certificate to enter any of the master’s degree programs available at San Francisco Theological Seminary (SFTS). SFTS, which is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA), provides Christian, interfaith, and interdisciplinary educational opportunities for a wide range of professions, encouraging students to deepen their personal spiritual journeys while also accompanying others through their experiences.
