Kudos Corner: Student honors

Part of the celebration during commencement season is the announcement of numerous well-earned honors at the University of Redlands. We proudly showcase each of these stellar accomplishments and congratulate all of these students.

Here are the awardees, listed alphabetically under each school presenting the awards; honor society members (including scholar-athletes) follow at the end. In some cases, links are included to a video of a virtual presentation of the award.

College of Arts and Sciences

Hailey Aguirre—Alpha Delta Kappa Outstanding Student Teaching, presented annually to an undergraduate who demonstrates a strong commitment to education

Dawit Aklilu—David Boies Award, for excellent work in legal analysis

Nikki Alcantar—Outstanding Student Award in Spanish, presented to a senior who has shown exceptional scholarship, exemplary dedication, commitment, and service in the area of Spanish

Jaclyn Alvarado—Outstanding Senior of the Year in Business Administration, voted by the faculty as both an excellent scholar and a major contributor to the department, campus, and outside communities, including varsity sports and service

Brandyn Alvarez—Henry G. Dittmar Prize, for an outstanding senior, in memory of a most distinguished professor who was a meticulous historian, engaging lecturer, and a beloved mentor

Maxwell Auerbach—Judson Sanderson Award, presented to an outstanding senior mathematics major

Carolina Barbosa—Velma Hooper McCall Award, presented to a woman in the junior class who has demonstrated exemplary academic achievement, is an involved student, and is held in high regard by her peers and faculty members

Olivia Beck—Elaine Brubacher Prize, presented to a student who exemplifies one or more of the characteristics that Brubacher demonstrated so well during her career: overcoming barriers to achievement, expanding opportunities for others, serving the larger community, and demonstrating excellence in science

Keilee Bessho—Outstanding Philosophy Student

Bria Bowton—Robert D. Engel Award, presented to an outstanding senior biochemistry and molecular biology, biology, chemistry, computer science or physics major

Caldwell Bridges—Edmund C. Jaeger Award, for exceptional scholarship to a junior biology student planning a career in teaching or research

Dylan Carlyle—Outstanding Senior of the Year in Business Administration, voted by the faculty as both an excellent scholar and a major contributor to the department, campus, and outside communities, including varsity sports and service

Amanda Chiles—Sadath Garcia Impact Award, honoring a student whose contributions have extended beyond both the traditional classroom and the physical confines of the campus community

Megan Congdon—Sigma Alpha Iota Collegiate Honor Award, for exemplary scholarship, musicianship, and fraternity service to the Sigma Eta chapter

Brittany Dinkins—Excellence in Management Award, presented to one or more graduating seniors to recognize academic excellence in the integration of the B.A. in management with the required second major

Connor Edmundson—Thelma Beardsley Award, presented to the senior music education major who has demonstrated the greatest potential for success in this field

Whittney Elmer—Associated Students of the University of Redlands President’s Award, presented to a student whose ideals embody the institution’s mission and whose contributions to the community have helped enhance the student experience, both of which have resulted in the high regard and respect of others, as well as the admiration of peers

Jeena Epperson—Theta Alpha Kappa Undergraduate Achievement Award, recognizing the academic achievements of a student who demonstrates outstanding success and promise in the study of religion and theology

Margaret Eronimous—Armacost Library Undergraduate Research Award in the arts/humanities/social sciences, which honors undergraduate students who demonstrate thoughtfulness and creativity in their approach to research and whose work exhibits excellence in critical thinking

Jorge Aroujo Felix—Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Collegiate Honor Award, for musical ability, leadership, and service to the School of Music

Outstanding Interdisciplinary Work in Public Policy, recognizing a graduating senior whose capstone achieves excellence in part through the deft utilization of interdisciplinary methods and perspectives

Outstanding Senior in Religious Studies, for a religious studies senior in recognition of exemplary intellectual engagement and overall enthusiasm, integrity, and excellence in serving as an agent of transformation on the University of Redlands campus and in the wider community

Crystal Garcia—Judith Morrison Award, presented to an undergraduate with awareness of multicultural issues, who has earned excellent grades, and participates in extracurricular activities that advance the goals of decreasing disparities in services and access to services to individuals from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds

Jacob Green Memorial Prize, honors College of the Arts and Sciences students with a commitment to racial justice, equality, and leadership to build a loving, inclusive community at the University of Redlands

Charlotte Burgess Community Impact Award, honoring a student or group positively impacting the community through fundraising, advocacy work, or direct service

Outstanding Senior in Communication Sciences and Disorders, awarded to a senior who has demonstrated overall excellence as an undergraduate student in Communication Sciences and Disorders and has the potential for making a significant contribution to the profession

Douglas R. Moore Distinguished Service Award, conferred by the University of Redlands Alumni Association on a student who exemplifies the alumni tradition of service to the community and/or University 

Alexandra Glick—Robert D. Engel Award, presented to an outstanding senior biochemistry and molecular biology, biology, chemistry, computer science or physics major

Ty Hranac—Roger Tomlinson Prize for Excellence in Geographic Information Systems, awarded to an undergraduate reflecting academic excellence; demonstrating professional interest in geographic information systems through community service, internships, employment and other activities; and applying creative application of geospatial technologies for research, instruction, community service, and other areas

Lindsay Jordan—Armacost Library Undergraduate Research Award in the science/technology/engineering/math disciplines, which honors undergraduate students who demonstrate thoughtfulness and creativity in their approach to research, and whose work exhibits excellence in critical thinking

Anna Klein—Eugene Kanjo Prize for Excellence in Literary Studies, awarded to students who have produced literary analysis of outstanding depth, creativity, and significance

David Kobylka—Frederick John Wiley Memorial Award, awarded for excellent work in international relations

Justin Lee—Presser Undergraduate Scholar Award, presented to an outstanding junior music major based on musical promise and academic achievement

Serena Marquez—Nelson W. Burdett Endowed Graduate Scholarship Award, presented annually to an undergraduate or post-baccalaureate teacher credential candidate who demonstrates a strong commitment to education and the potential to become an outstanding educator

Thomas Maul—Outstanding Student Award in Spanish, presented to a senior who has shown exceptional scholarship, exemplary dedication, commitment, and service in the area of Spanish

Marina Mondot—Phi Alpha Theta Award, presented by the History Department to an outstanding senior who excels in academic achievement and service to the study of history at the University

Taylor Family Community Service Award, presented to a student who has made service a constant in his or her life; recipients embrace the spirit and art of service through involvement in civic duties such as fundraising and volunteering, and serving as a steward of initiatives and causes that advance the wellbeing and welfare of others

Matthew Rafeedie—Colwell Prize, for excellent work in American politics

Eric Ramirez—Outstanding Student Award in Spanish, presented to a senior who has shown exceptional scholarship, exemplary dedication, commitment, and service in the area of Spanish

Francisco Rangel—School of Music Graduate Student Service Award, awarded to the student who has contributed the most to the music program during his or her two-year residence

Blake Roy—Frank Serrao Male Senior Student-Athlete of the Year Award, sponsored by the Bulldog Bench and presented to the most outstanding male senior student-athlete in recognition of excellence in academia and athletics

Janean Ruttner—Eugene Kanjo Prize for Excellence in Literary Studies, awarded to students who have produced literary analysis of outstanding depth, creativity, and significance

Madeline Salminen-Cunningham—Outstanding Student Award in Spanish, presented to a senior who has shown exceptional scholarship, exemplary dedication, commitment, and service in the area of Spanish

Stelle Salsbery—Tutor of the Year Award, presented to the tutor who has demonstrated outstanding enthusiasm, reliability, a positive attitude, and dedication in tutoring their subject matter within the tutoring program

Kristen Sauceda—Outstanding Public Policy Scholar, presented to one or more outstanding graduating seniors in public policy who have not only demonstrated excellence on their coursework and/or leadership while at the university, but also have tremendous potential for future careers in public policy and public service

Robert D. Engel Award, presented to an outstanding senior biochemistry and molecular biology, biology, chemistry, computer science or physics major

—David Miller Award, presented in memory of David Miller, whom we lost months from his graduation in 2009, and in honor of the graduating physics student who exemplifies David’s spirit: the personal integrity, the infectious enthusiasm, and the strength to chart his or her own course

Sarah Solares—Lawrence R. Harvill Award, presented to the outstanding senior in computer science  

Ashley Somers—Sigma Alpha Iota Scholastic Award, presented to a music major from the University’s chapter for the highest cumulative grade point average

Jacob White—School of Music Performance Award, presented to the most outstanding graduating student performer in the School of Music

Megan Wilensky—Dr. Emily Culpepper Award, presented to a student who has achieved outstanding work in women, gender, and sexuality studies by demonstrating the integral connection of academics and activism in our interdisciplinary field

Rachel Wilkin—Taylor Family Community Service Award, presented to a student who has made service a constant in his or her life; recipients embrace the spirit and art of service through involvement in civic duties such as fundraising and volunteering, and serving as a steward of initiatives and causes that advance the wellbeing and welfare of others

Tyrone J. Aburto—Gordon C. Atkins Memorial Scholarship, recognizes School of Business graduates for their academic achievement and program participation

Jennifer A. Bassford—Center for Spatial Business Undergraduate Excellence Award, for outstanding course projects submitted by School of Business undergraduates enrolled in the GIS [Geographic Information Systems] for Business course

Kelly Deleon—Lee Steven Bertrand Military Recognition Award, recognizes active-duty and veteran students who demonstrate determination, resilience, ethical integrity, intellectual rigor, and responsibility to family and community

Nancy Romero Diaz—Kathie Rawding Endowed Scholarship, awarded to a female undergraduate or graduate student of color who strives for success and has demonstrated financial need, and is not receiving tuition from an employer

Alton Edenfield III—Center for Spatial Business Graduate Excellence Award, for outstanding course projects submitted by School of Business graduate students enrolled in the MBA program’s location analytics concentration

Maria F. Patino Gonzalez—Center for Spatial Business Graduate Excellence Award, for outstanding course projects submitted by School of Business graduate students enrolled in the MBA program’s location analytics concentration

Andrea A. Hanna-Price—Banta Community Service Award, presented to students who demonstrate a commitment to their communities through philanthropic, volunteer, and/or service activities

Ricardo Haro—Williamina Davidson, Evelyn Reamer Matich ’51, and Catherine Matich ’49 Endowed Scholarship, awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student, who is an Inland Empire resident, has a 3.75 cumulative GPA, has completed 18 units and is currently on financial aid

Alexander Irigoyen—Center for Spatial Business Graduate Excellence Award, for outstanding course projects submitted by School of Business graduate students enrolled in the MBA program’s location analytics concentration

Timothy M. Kinman—Alice Mozley Endowed Scholarship, recognizes an outstanding undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in the School of Business

Nora C. Munoz—Banta Walker Ethics Award, tuition remission offered to students for demonstrating an understanding of the importance of ethics and corporate responsibility by submitting a written essay, research paper, or case study addressing an ethical problem, issue or accomplishment within a business or industry

Pierina D.
