How to plant and care for your tree seedling

1. Find a good location to plant your tree | Encuentra un buen lugar para plantar tu árbol:

• Call DigAlert (811) to locate pipes and determine the best location for your new tree.
  • Website: https://digalert.org/
• Find a location where there is:

+ Clear space overhead – no roof or wires that the tree could grow into. 

+ Water available, either from sprinklers, hose, or watering can.   

• Plant at least 8-10 feet away from concrete structures/areas (house, sidewalk, etc.)
• If you don’t have a good place to plant your tree where you live, reach out to your neighbors, friends, and other family members to see if they would allow you to plant your tree where they live

• Encuentre un lugar donde haya: 

+ Espacio despejado – no cables o techo en el camino donde el árbol no pueda crecer

• Plantar al menos 8 a 10 pies de distanica de estructuras/áreas de concreto (casa, acera, etc.)
• Si no tiene buen lugar para plantar su árbol donde vive, comuníquese con sus vecinos, amigos, y otros miembros de la familia para ver si le permitirían plantar su árbol ahí

2. How to plant | Como plantar:

• Dig a hole that is as deep and twice as wide as the tree sleeve 
• Carefully remove the sapling from the sleeve/pot 
• Gently loosen the roots with your fingers 
• Place the tree in the hole 
• Pack dirt around the roots, making sure all of them are covered 
• Water thoroughly. If that causes the soil to sink around the tree trunk, place more soil around the tree’s trunk. 
• To make it easier to water, build a little basin by making a 2 – 3 inch “wall” of packed-down dirt in a circle around your tree. That way you can fill up this area with water and allow it to sink in around your tree and not runoff.
  
  
• Cavar un hoyo que sea tan profundo y dos veces más ancho que la manga del árbol
• Retire con cuidado el arbol de la manga/maceta
• Afloje suavemente las raices con los dedos 
• Coloca el arbol en el hoyo
• Empaque tierra alrededor de las raices asegurandose de que todas estan cubiertas 
• Asegúrese de regar su árbol después de plantarlo. Si esto causa que la tierra se hunda alrededor del tronco del árbol, coloque mas tierra alrededor del tronco del árbol. 
• Para facilitar el riego, construya una pequeña Palangana haciendo una ¨pared¨ de tierra compactada de 2 a 3 pulgadas en un circulo alrededor de su árbol. De esa manera, puede llenar esta área con agua y permitir que se hunda alrededor de su árbol.

3. Caring for your tree | Cuidando tu arbol:

• Make sure to water your tree at least twice a week in the first year of its life. If your tree is planted in very dry soil or when the weather is really hot, you may have to water it more often. Once the tree grows larger, it does not need as much water to grow and you can space the times you water further apart. 
  
  
• Asegúrese de regar su árbol al menos dos veces por semana en el primer ano de la vida del árbol. Si su árbol esta plantado en tierra muy seca o cuando haga mucho calor, es posible que tenga que regar con mas frecuencia . Cuando el árbol crezca mas, no necesita tanta agua para crecer y puede espaciar las veces que riegas mas lejos. 

4. Recording where your tree was planted | Registrando donde se planto su árbol:

• We want to see where all our trees got planted! Go to https://urspatial.redlands.edu/apps/plantathon/addtree.html. Fill in where you planted your tree and what kind it is. You can even take a picture of your tree in its new home. Once you enter all the information, the app will let you know how much work your tree will be doing for all of us and our environment.
  
  
• ¡Queremos ver donde plantaron todos nuestros arboles! Vaya a https://urspatial.redlands.edu/apps/plantathon/addtree.htmly complete el formulario que aparece, le pregunta donde sembró su árbol y de que tipo escogió. También puede incluir una foto de su árbol en su nuevo hogar. Una vez que ingrese toda la información, la aplicación le permitirá saber cuanto trabajo esta haciendo su árbol para todo nuestro ambiente. 

5. If you don’t have a place to plant | Si no tiene un lugar donde plantar su árbol:

• If you can’t find anywhere appropriate to plant your tree, you can plant it in a pot and keep it watered and growing until you can find a place.   
  
  
• Si no puede encontrar un lugar apropiado para plantar su árbol, puedes plantarlo en una maceta y mantenerlo regado y creciendo hasta que puedas encontrar un lugar.
