Southern California Art Museums: Collection, Curation, Community

Southern California is home to a wealth of art museums, and they play a variety of different artistic and social roles in our communities. This class is an opportunity to visit some of those museums. Our work will range from appreciation of the wide variety of works to an understanding of how curators choose to organize museum spaces, and a consideration of how museums engage with their communities. There are also ongoing global discussions and practices around stolen art and the restoration of cultural artifacts to their cultures and places of origin.

$1800

Included in the course fee:

• Accommodations: 5 nights (double/triple occupancy)

• Meals: 5 community meals

• Transportation: Transportation will be by carpool, students who drive will be compensated mileage and reimbursed for parking fees.

• Excursions, Admissions & Course Material Fees: Tours at 3-5 museums; all course materials.

Not included in the course fee:

• Additional costs: Students will need to cover the cost of meals outside of our group meals and the cost of housing in Redlands for the duration of the May term
