In this course, we will examine the global history of cinema, from the silent to sound to digital eras. We will explore the shifting global marketplaces of entertainment and consider the role of media content in tourism and adaptation. We will travel to Munich for the Bavaria Film Studios tour to enrich and deepen our study of global mass culture. We will visit the Mauthausen Memorial and examine Holocaust cinema. We will consider the centrality of the 1965 film The Sound of Music (SOM) to Salzburg’s tourism industry, taking the SOM bus tour and visiting the SOM Marionette Theater.
