Dear University Community:
I am pleased to announce that the University of Redlands has rejoined the New American Colleges and Universities (NACU), a national consortium of innovative, mission-driven institutions that combine liberal arts, professional preparation, and civic engagement.
This is more than a reconnection. It is a return to our roots. Redlands was a founding member of NACU after Vice President for Academic Affairs Frank Wong’s influential essay, The Ugly Duckling of Higher Education, sparked the creation of this unique group of institutions. His vision of a university that prioritizes integrated, student-centered learning continues to shape NACU’s mission today.
Rejoining NACU reinforces what has long been true about Redlands: we are at our best when collaborating with others who share our values. Uniting with like-minded institutions brings important resources to the table, enabling us to better address the complex challenges facing higher education today, whether that involves improving access and equity, responding to an evolving workforce, or preparing students to lead in a rapidly changing world.
This partnership opens the door to shared research, innovative academic programming, and the exchange of ideas that will enrich the Redlands experience. It also strengthens our voice as an institution deeply committed to personalized, holistic, and forward-thinking education.
At a time when institutions like ours are more essential than ever, I am proud that we are once again standing alongside our NACU peers to help shape the future of higher education.
Sincerely,

Krista L. Newkirk
President
