Dear University Community,
It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of former Trustee David Banta '63 '65, a devoted member of the Bulldog family and longtime champion of the University of Redlands. David passed away peacefully at his home in Newport Beach on February 11.
David's love for Redlands was lifelong, woven into the very fabric of the maroon and grey. A proud Bulldog and dedicated Bird, he gave tirelessly to the University, serving on comprehensive campaign committees, reunion planning committees, and many other initiatives that strengthened our community. His leadership extended to the Board of Trustees, where he served with distinction from 1989 to 2008 and was awarded the Alumni Association's Distinguished Service Award in 1997.
David's lifelong love story with Stephanie '63, his junior high school sweetheart, was a testament to his warmth and devotion. The two were married shortly after college and shared more than 60 years together.
After an early career as a science teacher at Cope Junior High School (1963-66), David transitioned into finance, becoming a respected stockbroker and later founding Banta Asset Management, LP. His business became a family endeavor when his sons Mark '89, Michael '92, and Stephen joined him in 1993.
David's commitment to ethical leadership and education extended to Redlands in profound ways. In 2005, he and Stephanie established the Banta Center for Ethical and Purposeful Leadership, ensuring future generations of students would develop a strong sense of ethics and responsibility in business leadership.
David is survived by his wife, Stephanie, sons Mark (Kimberle '89, '91), Michael (Sara), and Stephen (Pam), and 7 grandchildren. David's ashes will be placed in the rose garden at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Glendale by his sons.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that contributions be made in David's memory to the future David D. Banta Endowed Scholarship at the University of Redlands. Gifts may be mailed to:
