Thank you, Bulldogs

Dear University Community:

I am writing with an update regarding our guests from the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), who sought safety on our Redlands and Woodbury campuses during the Hughes Fire evacuation. I’m pleased to share that our new friends safely departed our campus on Sunday to return to their campus in Valencia.

As we reflect on the last week, I want to highlight the extraordinary response of the Bulldog community. In a moment of urgency, you mobilized and sprang into action. Many of you reached out to local partners to gather resources and support. Others worked late into the night preparing spaces, creating access cards, coordinating logistics, and addressing every detail to ensure our CalArts neighbors felt welcomed and cared for.

The last few days have been a shining example of why we do what we do. Even in moments of uncertainty and challenge, the Bulldog spirit drives us to do what is right, and to assist those in need. I have never been prouder to be part of this incredible community. Your actions reflect the very best of who we are.

To every member of our community who contributed—whether through action, support, or understanding—thank you. Your compassion and unity were felt deeply by our guests and are a testament to the incredible strength of the Redlands community.

Take pride in knowing that we made a meaningful difference during a difficult time. Together, we continue to show the world what it means to be a Bulldog.

Sincerely,

Krista L. Newkirk
