Dear University Community:
I am writing to update you on the rapidly developing situation regarding the Hughes Fire, which has grown significantly in the last few hours. This brush fire is moving quickly, and evacuation orders have been extended into several areas of Los Angeles and Ventura counties.
At this time, I want to reassure you that the Redlands campus and all University of Redlands campuses, including Woodbury, are safe and not included in any evacuation zones. The safety of our community is our top priority, and we are continuing to monitor the situation closely.
In a spirit of solidarity and support for our neighbors, the University of Redlands has been asked to assist the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), which has been significantly impacted by the fire, and their campus has been forced to evacuate. As a result, approximately 150 CalArts students and staff may seek shelter at our Redlands campus. We are already receiving 44 students at our Woodbury campus.
We are grateful for the opportunity to offer them a safe place to stay during this challenging time, and we are working to ensure we can provide the necessary support for their comfort and well-being.
Many of us in the Redlands community are still healing from the effects of the Eaton and Palisades fires, and this is a time for us to come together and share our strength with others. We hope this gesture of kindness and unity helps provide the support and safety our CalArts neighbors need as they navigate the uncertainty ahead.
Thank you for your understanding and for continuing to show compassion and solidarity for those in need. We will provide further updates as the situation develops.
In the meantime, you can stay informed by following the latest updates from local authorities.
