Remembering Carlotta Benson

Jul 17, 2025

Dear University Community,

Some people have a way of making a place feel like home. For more than 40 years, Carlotta Benson did exactly that for the University of Redlands. A beloved and constant presence in our dining spaces, Carlotta passed away recently, leaving a deep void in the Bulldog community.

Since learning of her passing, we’ve been incredibly moved by the outpouring of love and gratitude from students, alumni, and colleagues. So many have shared beautiful memories and heartfelt tributes, each one a powerful reminder of the impact Carlotta had on our lives and on this campus.

Whether you knew her from the Den, the Launch Kitchen, or simply crossed paths with her on campus, chances are you remember her smile, her warmth, and the unmistakable love she extended to everyone, especially students, whom she proudly called “her kids.” As one student shared, “During some of my toughest days at Redlands, I knew that all I needed to do was go to the Launch Kitchen, because Carlotta would be there to comfort us and make us laugh.”

To know Carlotta was to experience unconditional love. Students recall how she just knew when they were doing well, and when something was off. “Walking into the Launch and hearing her was the most beautiful feeling,” one student wrote. “She was always so kind.”

Her generosity of spirit extended far beyond the dining halls. A colleague shared, “Carlotta took me under her wing when I first arrived in Redlands as a student. She had a special way of making me feel at home, and that warmth deeply influenced how I showed up for students once I began working there.”

Her kindness radiated through every moment and every interaction. As one tribute so beautifully said, “From late-night dinners after practice to quick snack runs before class, Carlotta was always there, with open arms and an open heart.”

Generations of Bulldogs were nourished not only by the meals she helped prepare, but by the genuine care she gave so freely. Carlotta’s legacy of kindness, laughter, and love will remain with us always.

A memorial service to celebrate Carlotta’s life will be held on Tuesday, July 22, at 1 p.m. at The Rock Church and World Outreach Center in San Bernardino. All are welcome to join in honoring her memory.

Sincerely,

Krista L. Newkirk
