2023-2024 Student Health insurance

Subject: 2023-24 Student Health Insurance

Action Required: Waive or Enroll June 1 - September 20

The University of Redlands requires all CAS undergraduate students enrolled in nine or more credits to have health insurance that provides access to local health care and helps minimize the financial burden an accident, injury, or illness creates.  The University confirms qualifying coverage on an annual basis.

On a practical level, this means if a student is enrolled in more than nine credits, their fall semester bill will reflect a charge for the University of Redlands Student Health Plan (URSHP), unless or until proof of qualifying coverage is confirmed. Proof of coverage must be received before September 20, 2023.  This is the only opportunity to waive the URSHP for the entire year of the plan’s coverage.

Students will receive emails directly from Academic Health Plans (AHP) who serves as the institution’s insurance broker and enrollment customer service representative, with a direct link to submit proof of insurance coverage that complies with the Affordable Care Act and meets State of California requirements (short-term medical plans and travel insurance do not qualify).  The first opportunity to submit proof of insurance coverage or to enroll directly will be sent on June 1, 2023.  The company will send a few additional reminders to students who take no action.  Should you not receive an email from AHP (noreply@ahpcare.com) on Thursday, June 1, please contact AHP Customer Service at 800-537-1777.  After the September 20, 2023 deadline, students who did not submit proof of insurance coverage will be enrolled in the annual insurance coverage.

A URSHP charge will appear on your fall tuition bill; this charge will be removed provided qualifying coverage is confirmed on or by 5:00 pm on September 20, 2023.

For those who need health insurance coverage, the University partnered with AHP, an insurance broker, to secure a student health insurance plan with Wellfleet. The annual coverage is $1,593. Coverage begins on August 10, 2023, and ends on August 9, 2024.  This total annual rate will be divided into two payments and billed to student accounts, as appropriate, in the Fall and Spring of this academic year.

Highlights of the plan include the following:

  • Compliance with the state and federal laws
  • Annual deductibles: $250 in and out of network combined
  • In-Network physician office visit $20 Copay, then 100% Coverage
  • Prescription drug coverage based on four tiers
  • Behavioral Health Hotline and Telemedicine services included

If a student outside the local area is currently covered, for example, under a family member’s employer plan, we strongly encourage making contact with the provider to confirm the depth and breadth of coverage in southern California and/or to inquire about extending coverage to San Bernardino County and surrounding areas.  For example, Kaiser Permanente customers have found some coverage is regional and therefore does not include healthcare facilities in the area surrounding the Redlands campus.

While full details of the plan can be found here, do note that some students may qualify for health insurance coverage through Medi-Cal, California’s part of the country’s national health coverage program, or Medicaid. Medi-Cal information, including eligibility categories, can be found here.

If you have questions about Medi-Cal, contact the San Bernardino County Office of Health and Human Services: https://www.dhcs.ca.gov/services/medi-cal/Pages/CountyOffices5.aspx.

If you have questions about the Student Health Insurance Plan or the health insurance verification process, contact AHP Insurance Service at (800) 537-1777.

If you have any general questions or concerns, please contact Senior Associate Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Ken Grcich at Ken_Grcich@redlands.edu.
