Reminder of the week

As many students, faculty, and staff return to U of R campuses for fall classes, weekly COVID-19 testing remains mandated for unvaccinated individuals to help protect the health of our community. Vaccinated individuals are encouraged to test voluntarily for COVID-19. Testing is currently available at no cost on the Redlands campus. For more information, see the U of R Getting Tested webpage and/or the San Bernardino or Marin County websites.

News you can use

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has acknowledged one side effect of the pandemic is elevated levels of stress: “Public health actions, such as social distancing, are necessary to reduce the spread of COVID-19, but they can make us feel isolated and lonely and can increase stress and anxiety.” In “Coping with Stress,” the agency provides tips on coping with stress and additional resources for those in need. The U of R Counseling Center webpage also provides information about  student services and community resources; resources for students now include access to free and immediate mental health support through the TimelyCare app on a cell phone or other device.

In “Worried About Breakthrough Infections? Here’s How to Navigate This Phase of the Pandemic,” Tara Parker-Pope of The New York Timescites research showing the rate of hospitalization among the vaccinated is 1 per 100,000 people and 29.4 times higher for the unvaccinated. Dr. Ashish K. Jha, dean of the Brown University School of Public Health is quoted as saying: “There’s been a lot of miscommunication about what the risks really are to vaccinated people, and how vaccinated people should be thinking about their lives. There are people who think we are back to square one, but we are in a much, much better place.”
