Subject: COVID Boosters and Flu Shots
I am writing today to encourage you to get the bivalent booster and a flu shot. These shots are safe and are the best way to prevent the spread of illness.
Your continued diligence in monitoring your own health, staying home when ill, testing when exposed or symptomatic, and promptly reporting positive cases, are required and necessary to prevent transmission on our campuses.
Vaccination Boosters
Our current vaccination policies, available on the UR Ready Website, require all students and employees to be fully vaccinated (primary dose + one booster) unless exempted. Vaccinations and boosters continue to prevent the most severe COVID-19 health impacts. You can reduce the risk of infection for yourself and others if you get the updated bivalent booster, which was recommended by the CDC when it became available on September 22.
Please note, the University is not requiring the updated bivalent booster as part of our current vaccination policy; however, we are encouraging it. The CDC recommends that people ages 5 years and older receive one updated (bivalent) booster if it has been at least 2 months since your last COVID-19 vaccine dose, whether that was:
If you have recently recovered from COVID, check with your health care professional on when you should get the updated bivalent booster.
You can schedule an appointment for a free bivalent booster when eligible at several retail chains including the following:
Flu Shots
Flu season is upon us, and with increased flu activity across the U.S. and the ongoing nature of COVID-19, it is more important than ever for individuals to get a flu vaccine this year. Getting your flu shot is still the best way to prevent the flu. Free flu shots are available at the locations included above. For more information on the 2022–2023 flu season, visit the CDC resource center.
COVID Testing
In partnership with the County of San Bernardino and OptumServe, there will soon be a testing minibus on the Redlands campus that will be located in the dirt lot behind Orton Center. The site will offer free testing to the community and will also administer therapeutic medication to those who test positive and wish to receive the treatment. Details will be forthcoming as we finalize arrangements.
As we enter the winter months, we encourage you to purchase your own rapid/antigen tests to be prepared for a potential winter COVID surge. Test kits can be purchased at most pharmacies and big-box stores (Walmart, Target) as well as online.
The University has a limited supply available for employees and students.
In addition, there are still many locations offering free viral/PCR tests. The COVID Clinic website is a great resource for locating testing sites by state.

Indoor Masking
Wearing a N95 or surgical mask (even one-way masking) in indoor public places, on public transit, and while traveling continues to be a good method for reducing transmission.
As always, the University continues to monitor the state of virus spread and will modify our COVID policies and practices when needed and consistent with the CDC, California, and local requirements.
Please continue to watch for COVID-related updates and check the UR Ready website regularly.
Thank you.

Gracias.
