California and the European Union have established themselves as world leaders in sustainability policy, both pledging, for example, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% below 1990 levels by 2030. How will meeting such reduction goals and other sustainability targets look different in California and Europe (and more specifically, Germany)? This course will explore questions such as this, placing the political economy of sustainability in the local context of Freiburg, a bastion of the German Green Party. It will explore issues such as climate policy, issues of transportation and land use, work, and energy in the classroom and through site visits around Freiburg and beyond, as well as through guest lectures by local experts on politics and renewable energy policy.
