Louanne Fuchs Long, distinguished teacher and performer, is a professor of piano at the University of Redlands where she has been a member of the faculty since 1962. She is Assistant Dean of the School of Music. As a performer, Long is a founding member of the Fuchs Duo, an acclaimed brother-sister violin and piano team, and has performed internationally in Europe, Asia and throughout the United States as a soloist and chamber artist.
Former students of Professor Long populate the globe as successful performers, influential educators and distinguished musical leaders, living and working in countries throughout Asia, Eastern and Western Europe, Russia, the Middle East, South America and the United States. Long's performing career began as a seven-year-old prizewinner in the Royal Canadian Competition and Music Festival (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada). Further prizes as a young teen resulted in multiple solo concerto appearances with Chicago area orchestras, and in Michigan at the Interlochen Center for the Arts. Such rich early experiences led to a series of rigorous European concert tours as soloist and chamber artist by the age of nineteen.
In her extensive career, Long has collaborated in recital with many prominent musicians, including her brother, violinist Richard Fuchs, with whom she has been performing internationally since 1981. Among the awards and commissions granted the celebrated Fuchs Duo was an invitation from the Chinese Arts Council and a generous grant from the Shigeru Kawai Foundation enabling them to present a series of major recitals and master classes in Asia.
Additional honors and awards include the presentation of a special commendation to Louanne Long from the Governor of California George Deukmejian in 1989 for outstanding accomplishment in the field of music. She has also been named Woman of the Year in the Arts by Town and Gown. Her colleagues at the University of Redlands have twice presented her with the Teacher of the Year Award, and her name appears in the 1998, 2005 and 2006 Who's Who Among American Teachers.
Long holds degrees from Oberlin Conservatory and Northwestern University. She has taken additional study at the Juilliard School of Music, and the Mozarteum Music Academy in Salzburg, Austria. Influential teachers have included Karl Ulrich Schnabel, Irwin Freundlich, Claude Frank, Aube Tzerko, Roselyn Tureck, Isaac Stern and Leonard Rose (chamber music), among others.
