The School of Education at the University of Redlands seeks to advance a more just society through our work in education, counseling and human services. As dean, it is my privilege to work with faculty across three dynamic departments to constantly reach toward this vision.
The School of Education already has an established and respected presence in the communities we serve, but our goal is continued exploration, growth and learning. As we navigate changing times and emergent challenges, we continue the quest toward our vision while making necessary adaptations.
Our programs serve undergraduate, certificate, Master’s and doctoral students. We also continue to seek innovative ways to expand our scope and influence, including by building on the 2006 establishment of the school’s Center for Educational Justice.
The passion for and commitment to equality and justice in California and beyond is the reason our students choose to study alongside our talented faculty. We also will continue to partner with professionals and practitioners in K-12, higher education, counseling and human services to further strengthen theory and practice and mutual learning.
Whether you are a prospective or current student, a community partner or professional in the field, I hope you will join us in our ongoing efforts to change and in some cases help redefine our social and institutional systems and structures.
Mario C. Martinez

Mario C. Martinez is the Robert A. and Mildred Peronia Naslund Endowed Dean of the School of Education at the University of Redlands. As a first-generation college student and now dean, Martinez’s range of personal and academic experiences translate into a commitment to work with students, faculty, and the school’s many partners to address the defining issues of our time.
Martinez joins the School of Education after sixteen years as a faculty member and consultant and six years in central and departmental administration in both private and public institutions. He has worked on national initiatives with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Lumina Foundation for Higher Education, and the Ford Foundation. Martinez also has worked with state- and institutional-level leaders across the country on a range of strategic and innovation projects. His academic writing focuses on state-level policy and performance and higher education strategy. His latest book, The Science of Higher Education: State Higher Education Policy and the Laws of Scale, examines growth curves and mathematical patterns of various higher education phenomena.
Martinez has spoken on a range of topics throughout the country over the course of his career, received foundation grants, served on national advisory boards, and was identified early in his career by the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education as an emerging professional who would impact education. He received his Ph.D. in policy and leadership studies from Arizona State University, an MBA from the University of Texas at Austin, and a Bachelor’s of Science in Electrical Engineering and minor in economics from New Mexico State University.
Martinez grew up in a mountain community in Northern New Mexico and currently resides in Redlands with his spouse Sara. They enjoy reading, attempting ballroom dances, and debating issues at the dinner table when any of their four children are in town.
