Who then gets to define what is “inappropriate,” “satisfactory,” or “normal?” What we know to be true is that more children of color are being diagnosed with an emotional/behavioral disorder than their white peers.
It is not uncommon to hear mathematics described as boring, difficult, abstract, confusing, or irrelevant. In fact, many of these descriptors are used often by students when talking about their mathematics classes. Coupled with worry, discomfort, and other negative views toward numbers, these feelings could be attributed to mathematics anxiety.

Worldwide, approximately 16 million girls will never set foot in a classroom, and more than two thirds of the 750 million adults without basic literacy skills are women (UNESCO’s Gender Equality in Education). It is often stated that educating girls and women is the single most effective way to improve the lives of all families and to enhance economic prosperity of struggling communities globally and domestically.
“Asking my students if they wanted to be the authors and illustrators of their own book motivated them so much that they forgot they were sitting in class writing sentences,” says Houck. “At the beginning of the class, some of the students couldn’t write their names or hold pencils correctly, and now they can write entire paragraphs.”
Equal access to quality education is a nationwide problem. Culturally responsive education is really important. Sometimes, traditional education can be based on the dominant culture of a country, which means that there are a lot of pieces of history that are being ignored. Advocating for culturally responsive education is another way of advocating for students.
