Experiencing Music

MUSCS 100 (4 credits)

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to Western Art Music, its elements, its history, its performance practice and its place in our society today. The exploration of active and analytical listening will be a main goal of the course. Fulfilling the requirements of the course should give each student a deeper understanding of and indeed, further enjoyment of live concert music and music recordings.

Student Learning Outcomes

Student will increase their knowledge of sound—its sources, effects, and organization—with emphasis on direct involvement through listening. Music of major styles and periods will be introduced with an emphasis on Western Classical music.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Articulate an understanding of the basic elements of music
  2. Describe how those elements of music combine to create music
  3. Recognize and compare various style periods and genres
  4. Recognize and analyze a specific style period of music through listening
