Meet Constance

Constance Clare-Newman, M.AmSAT, has over 30 years experience in somatic and movement disciplines, including the Alexander Technique, Continuum, Laban and Body-Mind Centering. As a dancer, Constance performed professionally in the Bay Area with Anne Bluethenthal & Dancers and has studied dance techniques ranging from Hawkins to Cunningham to Corvino. Constance’s teaching is informed by all these disciplines, as well as by her continuing education and exploration in embodiment, ecofeminism, trauma work and consciousness studies.
Constance has studied the Alexander Technique since 1990. She graduated from Alexander Technique Institute San Francisco in 2001 and has been teaching full time since then. She has taught Alexander Technique classes at the American Conservatory Theatre, the Asian American Theater Company, and the Academy of Art University, all in San Francisco. At the Academy of Art University, she developed curriculum and taught in the actor training program for ten years.
Constance facilitates embodied movement and contemplative practices, often outside in nature. With Peer Practice in the Desert, Constance collaborates in nonhierarchical, improvisatory exploration. With Movement Arts, Constance collaborates in site-based movement experiences and performances. Constance also leads workshops and groups for queer people, performers, people with Parkinson’s and activists.
