Thanksgiving, Closing, and Winter Break Information

Hello,

Residence Life and Housing wishes you the best as we approach the end of the semester. We are reaching out to provide vital information you need to know regarding Thanksgiving Break, fall closing, Winter Break Housing, and how to prepare for next semester.

Thanksgiving Break: All housing remains open during Thanksgiving Break. The last meal available on campus will be brunch on Wednesday, November 23rd. Dining services will be closed after brunch that day and will resume with brunch on Sunday, November 27th.

Fall Semester Closing: During finals week, your RA staff will post a checklist flier on your door listing the items to complete prior to leaving campus for Winter Break. You are expected to review the information and complete all items outlined. The last person to leave will write their name on the bottom line to signal all residents have left and that a staff member may enter to complete a safety check of the room to close the building for break. All communities, including apartments and organizational houses, close for Winter Break on Friday, December 9th at 2 PM. The last meal available on campus will be brunch on Friday, December 9th. Dining services will be closed after brunch that day and will resume with brunch on Sunday, January 8th.

Late Departure: To request a one-night extension for moving-out or departing campus for Winter Break, please complete the Late Departure Request on the MyRedlands Housing Portal under Applications and Forms by Monday, November 28th. For a cost of $100, charged to your student account, you will be permitted to remain until Saturday, December 10th at 2 PM.

Winter Break Housing Petition: If you need a place to stay for Winter Break, Friday, December 9th through Saturday, January 7th, such as athletes in season, international/exchange students with housing challenges, or for those who are housing insecure, please submit a petition for housing using the Winter Break Housing Petition on the MyRedlands Housing Portal under Applications and Forms. You must petition by Monday, November 28th to be considered for housing during any part of the break. Please be aware that all food services are suspended during the entirety of Winter Break and housing will be closed to all students beginning on Tuesday, December 20th at 10 PM through Saturday, December 24th at 10 AM. The cost for Winter Break Housing is $100 per week, charged to your student account.

Studying Abroad, Changing Rooms, or Leaving the University: For students leaving housing (i.e. studying abroad in the spring, taking a leave of absence, or withdrawing) or changing rooms at the semester, all check-outs and relocations must be made prior to closing on Friday, December 9th at 2 PM. Student must arrange a check-out time with a staff member 48 hours in advance. Students moving rooms must make arrangements that allow time to complete their relocation, including returning keys to their prior housing assignment, before the communities close.

Empty Space: In the event you have a vacancy in your room or apartment, a roommate will be assigned to you in the near future. If you have an idea of who you would like to move into this space, please communicate that information with us as soon as possible at RLH@redlands.edu. While we cannot guarantee requests will be met, we certainly will do our best. Please be reminded an empty bed space and the associated furniture must remain unused as a roommate may be assigned to you at any time. We try our best to communicate with you regarding possible roommates and facilitate a meeting in advance, however, a roommate can be assigned to the room without notice. This is especially important to keep in mind over breaks, including Winter Break, as there continue to be adjustments to housing assignments leading up until the beginning of the spring semester.

Spring Semester Opening: The communities reopen on Sunday, January 8th at 10 AM.

Should you have any questions, please email Residence Life and Housing at RLH@redlands.edu.
