The education students acquire from the social and interpersonal experience of residential life plays a vital role in their academic and social development. For this reason, the University of Redlands is committed to the residential experience by requiring all undergraduate students in the College of Arts and Sciences to live on campus for the duration of their experience. Each year, however, some exceptions are made for those circumstances outlined below.
Unless a student receives official off-campus approval from Residence Life and Housing, they must continue to participate in the Housing Selection and Placement Process to select a room on campus. Under no circumstance is a student without approval to commit, in any way, to live off-campus, including signing a rental or lease agreement. Students will not be exempt from their housing requirements should they choose to sign a lease without first receiving off-campus approval from Residence Life and Housing.
Once a student is approved to live off-campus, they are approved to do so permanently, without the need to petition again, unless approval is revoked due to violations of the Code of Community Standards. If at any time, however, a student wishes to return to living on campus, they must notify Residence Life and Housing at RLH@redlands.edu to make arrangements.
Even when a student meets one of these criteria, they MUST submit an Off-Campus Petition to be considered for approval to live off-campus. Students who do not petition during the spring Housing Selection and Placement Process (including new students using the New/Transfer Student Housing Intention Form), although they may meet one of the criteria, will not be approved mid-year. To be approved, students must also be in good academic and conduct standing.
Students seeking to live off-campus due to a medical/physical/psychological need or financial concern do NOT receive special consideration through the Off-Campus Petition Process. Residence Life and Housing is unable to make considerations for these types of circumstances and trusts the appropriate campus partners.
Students seeking to live off campus due to a medical/physical/psychological need, are highly encouraged to complete an Accommodation Request with Academic Success and Disability Services.
Students seeking to live off campus due to financial reasons must complete an Off-Campus Special Circumstances Appeal Form with Student Financial Services. In certain cases, the information listed on the FAFSA may not accurately represent a student's current family financial circumstances. If a student's circumstances have changed and they wish to live off-campus, they must submit this form to Student Financial Services by March 2, 2020. Once received, the committee will review the student's eligibility and contact them and Residence Life and Housing with a final decision.
Students requesting an exemption through Academic Success and Disability Services or Student Financial Services must continue to participate in the Housing Selection and Placement Process in the event their exception is not granted. Should off-campus status be approved, Residence Life and Housing will remove any housing and meal assignments and assign the student assigned off-campus status unless notified otherwise.
Returning students: All returning students petitioning to live off-campus MUST complete the Off-Campus Petition during the Housing Selection and Placement Process found on their MyRedlands Housing Portal under Applications and Forms. The process takes place each Spring to be considered to live off-campus at ANY point during the following academic year. No Off-Campus Petitions for continuing students will be considered outside of the Housing Selection and Placement Process. In other words, even if a student does not plan to live off-campus until the following spring semester, (e.g. after returning from studying abroad) they MUST petition before the deadline during the prior spring semester. Students are encouraged to submit paperwork simultaneously for any circumstances they request to be considered for review (e.g. completing an Off-Campus Petition for senior status with Residence Life and Housing and an Accommodations Request for a mental health concern with Academic Success and Disability Services). If additional information (such as proof of residency) is needed, those documents must be emailed to RLH@redlands.edu within three business days of approval. If a student is granted off-campus status, they MUST provide the address of their off-campus residency by July 1st and keep it up-to-date at all times.
New students: All new students petitioning to live off-campus MUST complete the optional off-campus questions included at the end of the New/Transfer Student Housing Intention Form. This is the only housing form needed for both on and off-campus consideration. If additional information, such as proof of residency, is needed, those documents must be emailed to RLH@redlands.edu within three business days of approval. If a student is granted off-campus status, they MUST provide the address of their off-campus residency by August 1st and keep it up-to-date at all times.
Appeals: There is no appeal for this process. Once a decision is rendered, students must wait until the following spring to submit a new petition.
