All About Housing
The residence halls at the University of Redlands are more than just a place to rest your head at night. Living in a hall will expose you to a diversity of individuals, ideas, and cultures, all under one roof. Your experiences will be one of the keys to a broader and more enriching life, not only during your time at the University of Redlands, but long after.
Redlands has a variety of residential living environments with facilities that vary in architectural style and capacity. Because living together with your class cohort can do much to enhance your first year experience on campus, we house all first time college students together in the same communities. For example, entering first year students who are Johnston are placed "on complex", in Bekins or Holt Halls.
The Residence Life and Housing Staff are dedicated to building lasting communities of learning. They contribute to a positive collegiate and holistic experience for every resident on campus by providing guidance on a variety of topics and planning educational, social, and developmental programs. They also see to it that the halls are comfortable and conducive to academic achievement. Students are invited and encouraged to get involved and work with the hall staff in planning the use of the residence hall activity funds allocated each semester to make the most of their new living environment.
As a result of the University's commitment to being a residential campus, all students are required to live on campus and have a meal plan for the duration of their time as a student unless they are 23 years of age or older, living with immediate relatives or legal guardians within 30 miles of campus, or are married or in a domestic partnership . Please note, housing is not guaranteed for students under the age of 16 or over 23 years old and only provided if space is available. Only students who have received off campus approval from Residence Life and Housing are exempt from the housing and meal requirement.
All new students will complete the New/Transfer Student Housing Intention Form on their MyRedlands Housing Portal. The portal is located on the top toolbar of the MyRedlands webpage. Remember, most rooms are double and triple occupancy, and there are a limited number of singles and quads. While students will share with us their room size housing preferences, please understand we cannot guarantee community or room size. We ask students and their families to keep an open mind, as we do our best to meet the needs and wishes of all students. Many students who request doubles or quads will be assigned to triple rooms based on availability of space. Residence hall assignment confirmations are sent via your Redlands email account in early July, with information about specific room and roommate(s) placement to follow in early August. For students starting in the spring semester, housing assignment confirmations are sent near the end of December.

- I'm concerned about the price of room and board. How do I communicate my desire, if possible, to have the least expensive options?
- The single largest factor contributing to the cost of a room is the number of roommates with which a student shares a space. Question number 1 on the New/Transfer Student Housing Intention Form on the MyRedlands Housing Portal asks students to indicate their room size preference so we can, to the best of our ability, collaborate with their First Year Seminar assignment to place them in a community with the preferred room size and what is physically available. The second factor contributing to cost is the selection of a meal plan package. Students self-select this option and can edit their choice under Meal Plans on the Housing Portal until 5pm on the Friday of the first week of classes each semester.
- How are roommate(s) assigned? What do I do if I don't have a roommate request?
- One of the most enriching experiences in living on campus is the ability to bring what you learn in the classroom to your life by utilizing those lessons and sharing what you learn with other students in your community. We support this engagement by collaborating with our academic partners to place students in their residence hall based on their First Year Seminar assignment. In July, students will be notified of their First Year Seminar and hall assignments and at that time we will introduce everyone who is in the same hall to one another through the roommate selection search function. This will allow students in the same communities to search for roommates within the cohort of courses with the common hall assignment. For those who do not request roommate(s), Residence Life and Housing will then match together based on their housing.
- Can I pick my roommate? My best friend and I want to room together.
- We believe in the importance of providing new experiences for students and for that reason Residence Life and Housing will match most of the first year students with their roommate(s) based on the life style information provided in the New/Transfer Student Housing Intention Form. We understand, however, that some students feel most comfortable being able to identify people they want to live with for the year, whether that be people prior to Redlands or those they have met through the admissions process. For students who have specific roommate(s) request, they have the opportunity to include that information in question 16 of the New/Transfer Student Housing Intention Form on the MyRedlands Housing Portal where it asks if there is anything else we should know when considering a housing assignment. We then collaborate with these students' First Year Seminar assignments to attempt to place them in courses with the same community assignment in order for them to live together.
- How does my First Year Seminar selections impact my housing assignment? When will I find out what hall I am assigned to live in for my first year?
- We collaborate with our academic partners to place students in their residence hall based on their First Year Seminar assignment. Because the size of each community varies, there will be a number of courses with similar themes placed within the same community. In July, students will be notified of their First Year Seminar and hall assignments and at that time we will introduce everyone who is in the same hall to one another through the roommate selection search function.
- Can I make changes to my New/Transfer Student Housing Intention Form?
- Yes! Merely go to your MyRedlands Housing Portal and select the form under Applications and Forms. Click on "Revise/Update This Application" and make the changes.
- I have a medical condition and am required to live in air conditioning. Who do I talk to about housing accommodations?
- Students with any kind of medical accommodation needs, physical or mental, to be considered in their housing placement, are encouraged to review and complete the Accommodations Packet with Academic Success and Disability Services. This is the mechanism to request accommodations for a student for their time in housing at the University of Redlands.
