Smoke contained in the Hall of Letters on Redlands Campus

This morning, smoke was detected in the Hall of Letters. Public Safety and Facilities were first on scene, followed by the Redlands Fire and Police departments to assess and complete an inspection of the building. Students, faculty, and staff were quickly and safely evacuated with no injuries reported. The Fire department will remain on scene to further monitor the situation and determine the cause which appears to be mechanical in nature. A remediation team will be onsite to deploy air purifiers to clear any residual smoke.

As it will take some time to determine the cause and conduct a safe and thorough repair and cleanup, the Hall of Letters will remain closed until further notice and classes will be temporarily relocated.

Faculty members: the Registrar’s office will send alternate classroom locations directly to you. Until you receive that notification, please switch to a remote modality, and notify your students as soon as possible.

Students: you will hear from your faculty whether your class will meet remotely or in a new location, if held in person.
