Officer Johnson began his law enforcement career with the California Highway Patrol in 1988. Upon graduation from the Highway Patrol Academy in 1989, he was assigned to the Baldwin Park Area, where he was assigned to field patrol duties. He became a Field Training Officer in 2006, where he trained many new officers. In 2000, he transitioned from a patrol car to a motorcycle. In 2004, he transferred to the San Bernardino Area and continued working field patrol, enforcing Vehicle Code, Penal Code, and other related criminal statutes. During his career, he was utilized as an Emergency Medical Technician, Officer-in-Charge, Radar/Lidar Officer, and Intermediate Accident Investigation Officer. After serving the State of California as an Officer for 30 years of service, he retired from the California Highway Patrol in 2018.
Officer Johnson joined the Department of Public Safety in September 2019.
