Subject: Security Alert – Incident Adjacent to Campus

A University of Redlands student reported an incident that occurred today at 4 p.m. in Sylvan Park, which is on city property adjacent to campus. While a female University of Redlands student was working on a documentary project, she was approached by a man who appeared to be intoxicated. When she felt uncomfortable and started walking away, he tried calling her back, then grabbed her arm and started pulling her. She broke free and ran north toward Colton Ave., then circled back to the skate park where her friends were located. He did not pursue her.

When she reported the incident later in the evening, the student described the perpetrator as a Hispanic male, 25 to 45 years old, approximately six feet tall, with a muscular build; he was wearing a blue t-shirt and dark baseball cap. Public Safety has searched the area and the Redlands Police Department is continuing to investigate. Public Safety is conducting additional patrols of the surrounding area as a precautionary measure.

As a reminder:

  • If possible, walk with a friend on or off campus.
  • Be aware of your surroundings at all times, on and off campus.
  • Stay in well-lighted areas and use the lighted pathways on campus as possible.
  • Avoid and immediately report any suspicious activity to Public Safety.
  • If assaulted, scream, yell, try to attract attention, and tell the assailant not to harm you.

If you have any information about the recent incident or any questions, please contact Public Safety at 909-748-8888 or ext. 8888 from any campus phone. Any off-campus emergency should be reported to Redlands Police at 911.
