University of Redlands
The University of Redlands has long maintained a regular on-campus semester fee structure for CAS undergraduate students who study away for an academic term. This financial structure is an equity-based model which maximizes the possibility of all students electing to spend a semester living and learning away from campus and in a distinct culture.
Students will be billed for their semester away via their MyRedlands accounts. Students are billed on the regular University billing cycle and are required to make full payment or enter into a payment plan by established university wide dates.
U of R Tuition/Fees: U of R semester tuition rate. Students are not permitted course overloads during their semester away.
Room and Board: The equivalent of the U of R on-campus standard double room rate and the U of R 14 meal a week meal plan rate.
ASUR Fee: The student associated fee.
U of R Application Fee: U of R charges a $40 study away application fee. This fee is charged to the student's account a few weeks after the student submits their study away application.
Mandatory International Insurance: Students will be enrolled in a mandatory international health insurance policy either by the University of Redlands or their specific study away program. For programs that include the mandatory health insurance, students will be billed directly by the program for this cost. When the U of R study away office enrolls students in the supplementary international health insurance, that fee will be included on the student’s account. Some countries, such as Australia, New Zealand, Germany and Japan, have additional mandatory national health insurance in which students must enroll and make separate payment.
Program Specific Application Fees: Students are responsible for any additional partner university or program specific application fees.
Passport: Students studying abroad are required to have a valid passport. A passport is not required for students studying on a domestic study away program. Passports should be valid for at least six months after the completion of a student's study abroad experience.
Visa/Residency Permit Fees: Some countries require students to obtain a student visa or residency permit to meet legal requirements to study in that country. These fees could include the cost of the student visa/residency permit, travel to and from the consulate/embassy, copies of required supplemental documents for student visa/residency permit application and more.
Airfare/Transportation: This includes round-trip airfare to the study location and all applicable commuting costs on public transportation during the course of the program, if applicable. Some programs may include airport pick-up though students should budget for this.
Textbooks: Students must purchase any required textbooks, photocopies and needed course supplies.
Cell Phone: Students should have a cell phone that works in their study location.
Personal Expenses: Students are responsible for the costs of any personal items, souvenirs, non-program related travel and more.
Single Room Fees and Refundable Deposits: Students are responsible for any additional fees associated with a single room and any required, refundable housing deposits.
Any withdrawal fees and/or unrecoverable expenses due to a student withdrawing from a program after confirming their study away participation will be passed along to students. Students must notify the CAS Study Away Office and their study away program in writing of their program withdrawal.
The University of Redlands allows a student’s financial aid (minus work awards) to be applied to the U of R Semester Study Away fee. Students should be sure to contact the Student Financial Services office to discuss any possible adjustments to their financial aid as each student’s circumstance differs. Student Financial Services will also be notified of any study away grants or scholarships a student receives.

Undergraduate students participating in May Term travel courses, who have not previously studied off-campus in a U of R approved semester long study away program or May Term travel course, and demonstrate financial need are eligible to apply for a May Term travel grant. Grant recipients will have the award amount automatically deducted from their course fee on their student account. Students are eligible for one May Term Travel grant during their time as an undergraduate student at Redlands. Application will open September 1st.

These grants provide for additional expenses related to the Salzburg program including airfare to and from the study location, local transportation, textbooks/materials, visas and registration costs, and other program related travel. Application opens in early-February.

A congressionally funded scholarship initiative for students who are dependent children of an active duty military member(s) in one of the following branches: Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Coast Guard, including activated (currently on active duty) Reserve Forces, Air National Guard and Army National Guard. Students must also be US citizens and a recipient of any type of Title IV federal financial aid.

This scholarship is an initiative of the federal government’s National Security Education Program and designed for undergraduate students to study less commonly taught languages in regions underrepresented as study abroad destinations. Study away programs must include language study as a core element of the program and program must be in a country outside Western Europe, Canada, Australia or New Zealand. Students must be US citizens. This scholarship is geared toward students broadly interested in national security issues and requires a one-year work commitment in the federal government for a minimum of one year after graduation.

The mission of the Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) is to provide scholarships and ongoing support to students who are underrepresented among the U.S. study abroad population. FEA makes life-changing, international experiences accessible to all by supporting minority, community college, and first-generation college students before, during, and after they participate in education abroad programs. Students must be US citizens.

The Rainbow Scholarship awards deserving lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) students who aim to participate in high-quality, rigorous education abroad programs. To be considered for the Rainbow Scholarship, applicants must self-identify on the Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) scholarship application.
Amount: Up to $10,000

The Freeman Foundation provides scholarships for US citizens/permanent US residents who have financial need and are undergraduate students planning to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia. Students must receive need-based financial aid and have a minimum GPA of 2.8.

Being creative when thinking about how to fund your study away experience, can help to make your study away program more affordable. Consider individuals and groups you are affiliated with who could possibly contribute to your study away funds. Think locally, regionally and nationally.
Direct, informal appeals often work best. When making an appeal, the more specific you can be about how you intend to use the funds the better (airfare, local travel, room and board costs). Also, having a plan on how you will thank your supporters, may help in your appeal as well. You can promise them a few updates during your program (Instagram posts, blogging, sending postcards), a presentation about your experience upon your return, or something more tailored to their interests/organization/business. Following up with a thank you also never hurts!
